I'm David Sodemann, co-founder of Boho Camper Vans. Along with my partner Brett Ellenson, I'm thrilled to introduce our latest innovation to the readers of BCM. Over the past six years, we've poured our hearts into creating custom camper vans, and today, I am excited to tell you about our Next-Gen Series. This new series represents everything we've learned and dreamed about in the world of camper van customization.
Our Boho Beginnings
When we launched Boho Camper Vans in 2018, Brett and I had a clear vision: to create customizable, high-quality camper vans that blend comfort, style, and functionality. We wanted to empower people to embrace the freedom of the open road without sacrificing the comforts of home.
Our inspiration to start Boho came from a personal experience. I rented a camper van in Hawaii and explored the island affordably and uniquely. That experience stuck with me, and I knew I wanted to bring that same sense of freedom and adventure to others.
Brett's background in mechanics and experience building and racing vehicles brought the needed technical expertise. His broad understanding of electrical, plumbing, and construction systems has been instrumental in our rapid growth.
Shark Tank Success
Our journey took an exciting turn when we appeared on the hit TV show Shark Tank in 2020. Standing in front of the Sharks, pitching our vision for the future of van life, was nerve-wracking but incredibly rewarding. We were thrilled to receive four offers and ultimately struck a deal with Barbara Corcoran.
The Shark Tank experience was a game-changer for us. It dramatically increased our brand visibility, attracting new customers and enthusiasts. Barbara's investment and mentorship provided valuable resources and expertise, enabling us to accelerate our growth and innovation.
Perhaps most importantly, our Shark Tank success validated our business model and vision. It demonstrated that there was indeed a significant market for high-quality, customizable camper vans and that Boho was well-positioned to meet this demand.
Introducing the Boho Next-Gen Series
I'm excited to introduce you to the culmination of our years of experience, customer feedback, and innovative thinking: the Boho Next-Gen Series. This van isn't just an upgrade; it's a complete reimagining of what a camper van can be.
The launch is designed to offer unparalleled comfort, efficiency, and freedom for life on the road. Whether you're a weekend warrior or a full-time nomad, this van is equipped to handle any adventure you can throw at it. Let me walk you through some of its key features:
Power to the People: Our Smart Energy System
One of the features we are most proud of in the Next-Gen Series is our advanced power system. At its heart is a 48V 13kWh battery system from Battle Born Batteries. Battle Born's intelligent battery technology provides a robust power source that can handle the demands of modern van life.
Complementing the batteries is the Victron Energy 48V 3000VA MultiPlus-II Inverter/Charger. This sophisticated device manages power flow, ensuring optimal battery system usage and charging. It seamlessly switches between battery power and shore power when available, providing a constant and stable power supply.
We've also equipped the Next-Gen Series with 800W of solar panels. These high-efficiency panels work with the Victron SmartSolar Charge Controller to keep the batteries topped up, even on cloudy days.
We've integrated two brand new products from the Wakespeed Product line for safe and rapid charging via the alternator. The WS500 Pro utilizes current, voltage, and temperature to deliver the most precise and effective charging possible for the battery bank. The Wakespeed WS500 Pro builds upon the success of the popular WS500 Advanced Alternator Regulator, introducing Bluetooth® connectivity for unmatched convenience.
Paired with the Wakespeed Configuration and Monitoring Utility Mobile App, users can now wirelessly configure, update, and monitor their alternator charging directly from their smartphones with the WS500 Pro. Combined with the Wakespeed 48V/12V Bi-Directional DC-DC Converter (WS48-12x), these components ensure the most efficient charging rates possible. They also provide backup starting power if the chassis battery dies during an expedition.
We've included the Victron Energy Cerbo GX Remote Systems Monitoring with GX Touch 70 Display for easy monitoring and control. This user-friendly interface lets you track your power usage, solar input, and battery status. Additionally, with Dragonfly IntelLigence technology, users can now monitor and receive notifications on their battery bank wirelessly via their smartphone on the Battle Born Mobile App.
What does this mean for you? Simply put, it means freedom, freedom to stay off-grid longer, work remotely from stunning locations, and enjoy modern conveniences without worrying about power. It's the kind of system Brett and I dreamed about when we first started camping, and now it's a reality in every Boho Next-Gen Van.
Comfort in Any Climate
Living in Arizona, we know a thing or two about extreme temperatures. That's why we've equipped the Next-Gen with a climate control system that can handle anything Mother Nature throws at it. We've incorporated a high-efficiency air conditioning system designed by Cruise N Comfort for hot summer days and a powerful Eberspaecher 12V gasoline heater for chilly nights.
The air conditioning unit and blowers are strategically placed to provide efficient cooling throughout the van's interior. Since the system’s condenser is mounted under the van, we can cover the roof with 800W of solar panels. This system is powerful enough to keep you comfortable even in the hottest weather yet energy-efficient enough to minimize the drain on the battery system.
The gasoline heater provides reliable warmth for colder climates without relying on the main battery system. This allows for comfortable winter camping without worrying about depleting your van's electrical resources.
A Home Away from Home: Interior Design and Comfort
Step inside our first Next-Gen Series van, "Del Rey", and you'll see why we're so excited about this launch. We've poured our hearts into creating a beautiful and functional interior. From the full-sized memory foam bed to the efficiently designed kitchen area, every inch of space is optimized for comfortable living.
The centerpiece of the living area is a full-sized bed with a 6" memory foam mattress, ensuring a good night's sleep after a day of adventure. We've strategically placed the bed to maximize space efficiency while providing a comfortable sleeping area.
Storage is always at a premium in a van, and we've risen to the challenge with innovative solutions. Del Rey features Baltic birch cabinetry, which was chosen for its durability and attractive appearance. These cabinets provide ample storage space for all your gear and necessities.
The kitchen area is designed for practicality without sacrificing style. It includes a sink with a flexible faucet, a two-burner stove, and a refrigerator/freezer, allowing for full meal preparation on the road. We've added a "Magma" tile backsplash for a touch of elegance.
One of our favorite features is the "Lava" epoxy poured table. These unique touches transform a van from a vehicle into a home. We believe that just because you're living on the road doesn't mean you should sacrifice style or comfort.
Lighting is crucial in creating the right ambiance, and "Del Rey" doesn't disappoint. We've strategically placed custom lighting fixtures throughout the interior, including an overhead light fixture we call “Lava Fields”, allowing for both practical task lighting and softer mood lighting for relaxation.
The overall design aesthetic strikes a balance between modern functionality and cozy comfort. We've added Western red cedar finishes to add warmth and a touch of natural beauty to the space.
Built for Adventure: Exterior Features and Capabilities
Of course, a Boho van isn't just about the interior comforts. Del Rey is built to handle whatever adventure you throw at it. We've included features like a robust front bumper, a versatile roof rack, and all-terrain tires. Whether you're cruising down the highway or exploring a remote mountain trail, this van is ready for it.
For those times when you need a little extra muscle, we've equipped the van with a 12,000 lb. winch. This can be a lifesaver in challenging terrain or emergencies.
We've included a lift kit and all-terrain tires to improve the van's off-road capabilities. These modifications provide better ground clearance and traction, allowing you to venture further off the beaten path.
We've also added exterior lighting from SD Lighting to ensure visibility in any conditions. Whether setting up camp after dark or navigating a tricky trail at dusk, these lights provide the powerful illumination you need.
Water and Sanitation: Home Comforts on the Road
Extended off-grid living requires careful consideration of water and sanitation needs. We've addressed these with a comprehensive system designed for convenience and sustainability.
Del Rey is equipped with a 28-gallon fresh water tank, which provides ample supply for drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs. A 6-gallon hot water tank ensures hot water on demand for dishes or a hot shower.
Speaking of showers, we've included a Tetra Van shower system with a collapsible curtain. This clever design allows for indoor showering without permanently dedicating a large amount of space to a shower stall. We also included an outdoor shower off the rear for the more uninhibited.
For wastewater, there's a gray water tank matching the capacity of the freshwater tank. This balanced system allows for efficient water use and easy disposal.
Regarding toilet options, we offer several choices to suit individual preferences. Whether you prefer a composting toilet for its eco-friendliness or a cassette toilet for its simplicity, we can equip your camper to meet your needs.
Our Partnership with Battle Born Batteries
A key factor in the Next-Gen's impressive capabilities is our partnership with Battle Born Batteries. This collaboration brings together our expertise in van design with Battle Born's cutting-edge battery technology, resulting in a power system that sets new standards for off-grid living.
As a Battle Born Batteries partner, we’re thrilled to get our hands on a pre-released version of the Dragonfly IntelLigence technology.
Battle Born Batteries' new Dragonfly IntelLigence™ technology elevates users' power system with these exciting features:
Battle Born's lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) batteries offer several advantages over traditional lead-acid batteries:
Moreover, Battle Born Batteries come with an industry-leading 10-year warranty, providing peace of mind for our customers. This long-term support aligns perfectly with our commitment to quality and customer satisfaction.
Customization: Your Van, Your Way
One of the core principles Brett and I established when we started Boho was the importance of customization. We believe that your van should be as unique as your journey. With the Next-Gen Series, we've taken this to heart. From interior layouts to exterior features, we work closely with each customer to create a van that suits their needs and style perfectly.
Some of the customization options we offer include:
- Interior Layout: Different bed configurations, additional seating, or specific storage solutions.
- Exterior Finish: Various vinyl colors and graphics.
- Appliances and Fixtures: Upgrades or modifications based on individual needs.
- Power Capacity: Option to increase or decrease the amount of kWh.
- Bathroom Options: Choice between different toilet options.
- Connectivity Systems: Upgrades for remote workers, including TVs/monitors or additional connectivity options such as StarLink.
- Outdoor Living: Options like exterior tables, outdoor showers, or expanded awning systems.
Our Commitment to Sustainability
As outdoor enthusiasts, Brett and I believe it's our responsibility to minimize our environmental impact. We've made conscious choices in the design of the Next-Gen Series to promote sustainability without compromising on quality or comfort.
One of our standout eco-friendly features is the use of Hempitecture Hempwool® for insulation. This sustainable material is made from hemp, a rapidly renewable resource requiring minimal water and no pesticides.
The Next-Gen's advanced electrical system, powered by Battle Born's lithium batteries and solar panels, promotes clean, renewable energy. This reduces reliance on fossil fuels for power generation, allowing you to minimize your carbon footprint while enjoying modern conveniences.
Water conservation is another area where the Next-Gen shines. Our efficient plumbing system, combined with low-flow fixtures, helps minimize water usage. The option for a composting toilet further reduces water consumption and allows for more environmentally friendly waste management.
The Boho Community: More Than Just a Van
What truly makes us proud isn't just the vans we build but the community we've fostered. The Boho family extends far beyond our workshop. We regularly attend expos and local events within the community and have an online presence where Boho owners can connect, share stories, and inspire each other. This sense of community is the heart of what we do in many ways.
Choosing a Boho Camper Van, especially the Next-Gen Series, is more than just purchasing a vehicle—it's embracing a lifestyle. It's about freedom, adventure, and a deeper connection with nature and community.
Many of our van owners report a sense of liberation that comes from downsizing their possessions and living more simply. The van's efficient use of space encourages a minimalist lifestyle, helping owners focus on experiences rather than material possessions.
Looking to the Future
As we look to the future, Brett and I are more excited than ever. The Next-Gen Series is just the beginning. We're constantly exploring new technologies, sustainable materials, and innovative designs. We aim to continue pushing the boundaries of what's possible in mobile living.
We envision a future where van life is more than an alternative lifestyle – it's a viable, sustainable choice for people seeking freedom, adventure, and connection with nature. With each project we build, we're working towards that future.
An Invitation to Adventure
If you're reading this and feeling that spark of wanderlust, I invite you to explore what Boho Camper Vans has to offer. We'd love to help you make your van-life dreams a reality.
The open road is calling, and with the Boho Vans Next-Gen Series, you're ready to answer. Here's to the journey ahead – may it be filled with adventure, discovery, and the joy of living on your own terms.
