Clutch & pressure plate?????
« on: July 05, 2009, 01:32:48 PM »
Hi folks, does anyone know right off hand if the clutch and pressure plate for the 4104 is the same as in the 4501?
Thanks in advance!

I very much doubt it, but if you need a complete 4104 clutch set up I have three.

Take the old one to a truck shop that does clutches, They should be able to fix you up. Just remind them it's for an 8V71 Detroit.

Oh.. The other thing is knowing whether it's a pull or push type clutch. There is a difference. There is also a thing called a clutch-brake that you may or may not have on yours. Trucks and later models had clutch-brakes but I don't think the cruiser had them, They are nice if you can get one to fit.

And before you ask.. A clutch brake is a pad that hangs on the end of the throwout bearing that stops the input shaft from turning while you have the clutch floored. Makes getting into and out of gear easier.

Jack if my memory serves me right?  :'(
The clutch from a PD4106 or a MC-7,8,9 with a 4 speed transmission will interchange with the PD4501 Scenicruiser.

Jack,

If you do take it to a clutch place be sure they use the right springs and take a copy of the maintenance manual to have them set the clearence  per the book. Until I got wise I have had both of these problems.

Jack, doesn't the 4104 use a single disk and the 4106 and above use the 2 disk clutch system with one model using a oil clutch.
I don't know about the GM but an Eagle can be converted over from the pull type double disk to a single disk push type very easy.
Huge difference in price the double disk are around a 1000 bucks and the single disk push type around 400 bucks and you being the only driver a single disk will last you for ever.          good luck

I believe luvrbus is correct.  With the low power of the 4104, it used a single plate dry clutch.  Then when the 4106 came out, rather then redesigning the clutch housing, they made it a dual plate wet clutch.  This is only used in the V drive.  I believe the 4501 and other T drives use a more conventional dual plate dry clutch like trucks use. Good Luck, TomC

Thanks for the replies.
I was told there were a couple of clutch assemblies from a 4104 available.  If anyone is interested im me.

Per the PD-4106 Maintenance manual X-6114 Section 5 Page 1 under description it states that the Clutch is a 2 plate dry disc type. ;D
After speaking with a fellow bus historian last night he stated that a PD-4106 PD-4501,MC-5 and MC-7&8 and 9 will work.
The wet clutch in the GMC coaches started with the PD-4107 through the H8H-649 Buffalo series coaches. ::)

Thank you JLV I didn't know what model used the oil clutch but I have saw a few of those leakers in the past.
A single disk works good on a Eagle replacing the double disk,Jacks call but I if I was the only driver the single for the price is the way I would go.
The flywheel will accept either even with the single being larger in diameter than the twin on the clutch disk.
The pressure plate is the same diameter with the same bolt and dowel pattern        good luck
