Truckers Path?
« on: July 06, 2021, 04:48:04 AM »
Does anyone here use the Truckers Path app when driving a bus?

What apps do you use?

I used it a lot when driving semi, but not as much for driving the bus. The one feature that is still handy is being able to see reports on how crowded a truck stop is before getting there. Don't stay overnight in truck stops though, so it's not nearly so important now.

The app I use more often is overnightrvparking.com (recently bought by togorv.com) as it finds lots more dry camping options than just truck stops.

For fuel options, I usually use the TSD app to find something along my route with the lowest cost.

FYI -
Sorry, but what a scam. Went to signup at overnightrvparking. Now merged with Togo RV that decided to make you pay $40 to get access to that site now.

Overnight RV Parking is now part of Togo RV!

When you sign up for Togo RV Plus, you’ll also get access to Overnight RV Parking. We simplify camping with RV GPS navigation, customized checklists, and unbeatable member discounts on camping and gear.

Not sure what the problem is...

overnightrvparking.com was never free, at least not in the few years I've been using it. It's been around $40/year for all that time. In the past you could extend your subscription by submitting site information and updates, especially letting them know about new locations.

Sometimes you have to pay for things which have value.

OK, no worries, sorry if it sound gruff. Meant to be a bit ironic - charging for service to tell you where to stay for free. I guess same old story - nothing is free. LOL

What you're paying for is the moderation and having someone coordinate all the information submitted by users. I've tried free group-sourced apps before, and the data is as good as what you paid. Overnight RV Parking does have someone at the helm trying to confirm data and such. Not sure if they'll maintain that now that TOGO RV owns it, but we'll see.

Trucker's Path also has some good features, just more suited to commercial drivers than recreational.

One of the other free ones - freecamping.net or some such site was free but it was unmoderrated which allowed outlaw locations.

We loved it as it had the Sherman Island spot until it got busted! Great while it lasted, though. LOL

I use truckers path for work to see if scales are open, and in the bus just to see if reststops have room

Yes, we use Truckers Path.  Gives us ideas on avoiding low bridges, avoiding roads which are not large - vehicle friendly.  Also gives fuel prices, fairly accurate.  Fill in the length / height of your bus and tow vehicle, then gives you routes to avoid.  We do pay the monthly app fee, also they do update the app frequently.  There may be better solutions.  We’ve used this for the past couple of years.

You might also take a look at Hammer gps. It's designed for trucks so perfect for our busses. It's similar to google maps, but also works offline and has options for large vehicles such as truck stops and parking.
Some are called, some are sent, some just got up and went.

How did we survive with only paper maps? Quite well. The reviews of these various "apps" are very mixed, they don't work as well as implied, and they offer more features for more money. They can also use a lot of data time.
