Title: Spam Post
Post by: JackConrad on November 11, 2008, 06:54:58 AM
Thanks to everyone that has emailed the moderators when you see a spam post.  I do not know what has happened, but we are getting a lot of them since last night.  Hopefully Phil or one of the more computer savvy moderators will have a handle on this shortly.  We do not like these post anymore than the rest of ya'll.  Jack

Rather than leave, if you suspect they are getting you email address here, go into your profile settings and select to hide your email address.  That way you can still participate in the forum and receive reply notifications but your email isn't publicly visible.

I also belong to 3 Yahoo bus groups (GMC, All-Busnuts, and MCI-Busnuts) but rarely get any spam at my email address.  Maybee, I am just lucky??   Jack

Luvrbus,

I don't blame you for leaving, however, on this board, no one can harvest your email address unless they are a registered member.
Your email address isn't accessible by non members. That's one thing we had to work on when the new board first started up.

If you look at some of your emails, especially the forwards, you'll find that your friends and buddies normally use the "cc" to send with which shows all of the email addresses that an email is forwarded to.
If you will instruct and help your friends learn to use "BCC" (Blind Copy), you'll end up with a lot fewer problems.

Personally, I don't give out my secure address to people until I know that they are secure enough to not send forwards all day long. In 2 years, I've had a total of 6 spam emails which were probably generated by computers just putting numbers and letters together.

Good Luck to you.
Dallas

I just sent an urgent email to Phil.  I'm sure he will be banning those new spammer accounts and their IP's very soon.  I suspect they are all the same person due to the timing.

Hi Guy's,

I'm not sure it's only here... Almost everybody I have asked today is having the same problem with spam. And none are on this bbs.

I think it's the time of year and the bad economy to lead these criminals to prey on us.

The moderators here made a good judgement call by approving all new members, belonging to 2 Prevost boards this was the easiest board to join I found and yes I did receive 6 spams today so I followed the advice given to Luvrbus hiding my E mail address from the public  Be Safe

I know that if you responded to an add on craigslist and they never got back to you it may be for a spammer. a buddy has an email address that is used only for contacting people on craigslist and he emailed someone about their ad and within a day or two was getting tons of crap for phamacy stuff and viagra etc.

How do you know the spam is coming from this board?

When I read the post this morning, I went and looked through my spam folder at the last 30-40 spam messages from yesterday
and this morning. Not one came through the address I use on this board. I deleted the entire 1000+ spam messages in the folder, but this evening, I checked again. There were 15 new messages in there from today. Not one was from this board address.

I should have searched the 1000+ messages for my address, but didn't think of that. I'll do that in a week or so when I get another 1000 messages in there.  I suspect not one will be from this board's address.

The point is, if you're having problems with spam in your inbox, get an email account that takes care of it. Gmail catches 99.999% of all spam that comes my way and puts it in a folder where it gets automatically deleted after 30 days. I don't even review the folder any more, as I've never found a legit email in there. I get between 50 and 80 spam messages a day in that folder, but because I download all my email to my home computer, I don't see any of it. I might get 1 message a month through the filter, and
then I can go mark it as spam, and never see another like it. In fact, I get more legit messages marked as spam by MS Outlook, than I see real spam come in.

I get very little spam.  I am not sure who filters it, I have a hotmail account, the premium McAff account and Vista. I get maybe 2 spam messages a week!   Jim

I use Yahoo and I believe I have my E-mail in my profile. But I'd guess that our security is good since I don't get and SPAM other than someone's wish that I buy Viagra from them! I really suspect that it's Dallas' way of pulling my chain. ;)

Oh, by the way, we're back in FL...it was getting too darned cold in the mountains of NC. It really takes pioneer stock like Uncle Ned and Wilma to survive those winters.

And, thank goodness, we're around the corner of my hero, Florida Cliff, and his wonderful family for the winter.

But, Cliff, that doesn't make me a fork lift when it comes to finishing your new bus barn! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Google's Gmail works great!!! No spam. It is, by far, the best free email out there (that we have found). I think that you all should give it a try.

BTW, if you start using Gmail now, not too many of the something"bus"@gmail.com will be used. ;)

JMHO

God bless,

John
