Title: Starter

Hello all
MC-5A / 8V71

When starting I have to hold starter button down for a couple of seconds after the engine starts or else it quits. Is this normal? It has always been that way and doesn't seem to hurt the starter or ring gear.

Yes, this overrides the automatic low oil shutdown until you have oil pressure. Even though you are holding down the starter button, the starter is disengaged as soon as you have fuel pressure.  Look at your wiring schematic, you will see that the starter relay coil goes to ground through the fuel pressure switch.  Jack

On my 8V71 it did that but with my L10 it just wears on the starter so I put in a relay and momentary switch to over ride the low oil pressure shut down and I hold that til the oil pressure comes up and then I let off the switch and have the low oil pressure cut off back in play.

Didn't know they were automatic now. I used to drive an International 9670 eighteen wheeler with a Cummins that had two starter buttons. You had to hold down both until oil pressure built up or the engine would stop.

We called it a "Cadillac Button", have no idea why??
