Title: Removed aux a/c unit on the back of my 9, need help identifying hoses....
Post by: ilyafish on January 07, 2009, 11:51:05 PM
okay, so my 9 has an additional a/c unit that was attached in the back.  Now i removed it, but im trying to figure out what is what....there is a power plug, a small hose that collects the condensation, and then 2 bigger rubber hoses.  What are those 2 bigger rubber hoses?

Thanks!

May be Freon lines?
By back do you mean the compressor in the engine compartment?

okay heres some pictures....your right Ed!  i was thinking that when i posted the topic but got lazy and hoped someone would know what im talking about.  never assume! haha.

okay, so this is the a/c unit.  it was mounted in the back of the bus on the interior, attached to the bathroom wall, hanging above the rear bench seat

here are the hoses and wires (on the interior obviously) as i removed/cut them off the a/c unit
2 black thick rubber hoses (which i dont know what they are), one thin yellow hose that collected condensation, and one power supply

(http://img518.imageshack.us/img518/2420/photohq5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

here is where the 2 thick black rubber hoses that are in question are attached to the a/c

(http://img84.imageshack.us/img84/8952/photo2sb0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

here is where one of the hoses goes (this is right above the curb side blower on the OTR a/c)

(http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/2236/photo3qr1.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

the other hose goes off somewhere else with another black hose that im not sure where it is running from

here is a far away shot

hope this helps

my bus did not have that unit.
In your 5th picture it looks like there is a condenser with a fan they probably go to that.
If I get a chance I'll look in "THE BOOK" and see if it's there.

Hoses are refrigerant lines, hi side and low side. they went to the coil in the unit.

i guess my next question would be how to properly disconnect them, or do i plug them up or what exactly

If you are not going to keep your OTR AC system operational then you can remove as much or as little as you want- becomes an appearance problem. Personally, I hate stuff left behind unless it is doing something. If the OTR system is staying then remove the hoses to the point where they meet solid pipe and then blank them off with an appropriate fitting that will ensure a freon-tight joint.

What came out of those hoses when you cut them?

Looks like the Coach AC system is integrated in this set-up, so as noted, you'll have to seal it up, back where it "T's" off the coach AC lines, down in the engine room.

not sure what came out of them....i cut em with a grinder haha.....didnt feel like using a knife

i dont think anything came out of them.  if those are the freon lines though, by cutting those hoses would that have released the freon gas from the system making me have to recharge the a/c, or is the freon out of those lines and kept somewhere else

Nothing came out? Coach AC already not working?

Hmmm.. if they are plumbed to the coach AC, then the refrigerant is gone... I'm thinking there would not be any valving in between to protect the charge.

Best to trace these hoses and find out for sure what's connected where and what is in the lines between there and there... if you plan to return the coach HVAC to functioning..otherwise, just keep removing all that weight!

That looks like one of the auxiliary AC units that Lamar Welch installs. If it is, the tag on the inside unit will read "Welch Industries".

Those are freon lines and there should be an auxiliary compressor mounted on the engine and belt driven from the accessory pulley, as well as an auxiliary condenser coil with an electric fan behind it.

Every one of these systems I've seen has been separate from the OTR AC system.

yup, you are correct.  it says welch industries.  i will look and see if i can spot the aux compressor and condenser.

okay, here is a picture of all the hoses....i put the pictures together as best as i could.  the two hoses that run to the fan, im not sure which one is the 'blue' and which one is the 'green', but you guys get the idea

so i guess in response to wildbob24, i am now curious if this entire system is just completely seperate from the OTR a/c.  also, buswarrior, i was wrong, when i cut the hoses there was a very strange smell.  i cut them with a grinder so i didnt heart anything leak but im assuming the smell was freon gas....ive never smelled freon before so i wouldnt know but im assuming that i guess thats what it was

thanks!

Yes, it is a separate system.

Looks like they mounted the aux compressor on the radiator fan gearbox and are running it with that pulley. It's the belt driven unit directly below the sight glass on your cooling system's expansion tank.

Looks like the condenser coil and fan are mounted on the curbside engine door.

You can remove all these components and lines and not affect the OTR system.

I've never seen that add on system, and to me it seems pretty slick.  You could repair that system, add some other lines to the original drivers air and have a nice system for over the road.  Why did you cut the lines?

I've made an offer on the condenser and compressor, so there's at least one person interested.  ;D

I agree with Tenor, pretty slick and already there,  would have been good for going road,  cheaper to fix if ever needed to than bus OTR,

I opinion vote to fix it and toss OTR :)
