Title: Inspection list for GMs and the 8v71
Post by: travlinman on January 19, 2009, 01:33:54 PM
I'm going to look at a couple of GMs in the next few weeks, anyone here have a pre-purchase inspection list for me? I've got one for an Eagle but it would be great to have one specific to GMs. I will be seeing a 4104 and a 4106. Also any specific way to check out the 8v71 motor would be of great help.

Remember that aluminum corrodes, especially when in direct contact with steel.  Find a pit or get it up on blocks and have a good look under there.  My 4104 is so old that most of the high wear items (levelling valves etc) have already been replace/upgraded.  The POs really influence how good the rig is.   iwould get an IR gun (you'll need one eventually) and give the bus a good run and check hubs and difs etc...Tha's all I know except an old bus that has been completely rewired would be good, 40-50 year old fabric wrapped wire is a short waiting to happen.

Cliff -

Because Steve lives fairly close to me, and it was in relation to something he and I had been talking about "off board", totally unrelated to being preserved for future BusNut searching. . .  Otherwise, as you well know, I would have.
