Title: turbo problem !!
Post by: rdbishop on July 23, 2009, 09:57:23 AM
Help guys,

My turbo has a broken fin on the exhaust side that is causing vibration and fuel all over the toad. I have a 8-92 turbo # 8101,440hp. Can I put a 475hp turbo #8511 to make the last 1000 miles home, which I have, or limp home with what I have?

You sure can Richard will be a little more smoke on take off but it will work that turbo is used on a bunch of different hp rating only the A/R is different Good luck

Richard your part number for the 8101 from DD should be 5101513 with a A/R of 1.60 FWIW that turbo was used in seventies for the 8v92 TA green block. with the raw fuel I would be concerned.

The TV8511 is a larger turbocharger>is it from a Detroit?   Do you have the actual part numbers?  1.23 A/R on the exhaust turbine housing side?

How did you lose a turbine blade?   Was there work done on the engine recently?   If you continue to drive your bus, you will have a similar situation that Sean has recently had.

Do you have time to rebuild your existing TV8101?   The TV8511 is a nice turbocharger depending>post the part numbers.

Based on extremely recent experience, I would advise against driving 1,000 miles on an imbalanced turbine.  You will be better off putting the other turbo on, or, better yet, get a new turbine put on the one you have.

Also, I would make a best effort to figure out how the turbine got damaged before putting a fresh one on.  If you are spitting bits out of the manifolds, you need to fix that first.

the turbo is a garrett tv 8511  p/n r8927027  s/n v 5501 bd107 and came off 8-92. this was on the inlet- m 24 a\r .61 b.o.  the exh just had garrett on it

The reason it lost a fin was I dropped a valve in cleavlen, ohio. I was towed to canton, ohio to a detroit dealer where a head was replaced engine cleaned out, etc. They didn't have a turbo to replace mine and of course on a friday afternoon. Said I could wait till tuesday or so to get one or drive mine, so we left. this 8511 has no play so I'm going to put it on.

Thanks

Richard

The number will be stamped inside the exhaust flange. As Zero said it is a bigger turbo and will move more air, you can change the hot housing ( H H ) to help with your low end and take away some of the smoke. You can also take the throttle delay off and go to a fuel modulator. What size air filter do you have, 7" or 8" 7" is fine for 440hp but 500hp.
