Title: Traveling this Year with the prices
Post by: luvrbus on May 31, 2021, 02:29:50 PM
Getting ready for travel this summer and with fuel prices and camp ground prices this season makes you wonder, every campground we stayed in last year has doubled in price.I for one am not going to pay $105 to $150.00 a night for a camping space.I don't know about the rest of you guys but those prices are stupid and I am not paying it

Pay it? Don't pay it? Choice is yours.

We're paying $45 where we are right now, and over the two weeks we're going to be on the road the prices at private campgrounds is from about $30 to $75.

Not sure where you are seeing $100+ prices, but there are better prices out there.

Stay east a 100 bucks is about average here,I cancelled our trip to the Circle Pines in William Az when they set me a Email that it would be $743.75 for a week,it was $350.00 a week last year, same thing in Idaho, that were I am seeing it Richard

Here's a site to check, especially for traveling from one place to another:

https://www.boondockerswelcome.com/

When you subscribe, you get access to request stays at any member hosts' sites.  Subscriptions are paid, or earned by hosting.  There's no cost per night, though most guests leave a small donation ($5-10), especially if they are able to hook up to electric.

I have a small quantity of 3-month subscriptions I can give out if anyone might use one.

Say what?????? We stay at nice places with Pools hot tubs, Laundry's, Full hookups pull throughs, trash service and they filled our Propane tanks for us at the last place for 2.70 two 20lber's for 22.00.

We are on the road and have Passport America we pay 1/2 price for a savings of $75.00 at just one place alone 265.00 for a week.
Our next place we get either PA or My wife's Veterans 10% and we pay $350.00 for a month. Most we have paid was in NM at !88,00 a month and that was Good Sam's.

Join Escapee's and you get $25.00 a night for overnight and less for longer. It is 49.95 to sign up and it pays for itself the first stay.

We also have Boondocker's Welcome which normally is free for at least 1 to 5 days stay sometimes no charge for electric.

Campendium lets you know where the free places are and some real cheap pay places too. These are easy to Join deals and either free or 25.00 to 50.00 yearly and one stay pays for them.

If you do Passport America please feel free to say we referred you, thanks and we will get an extra month free.

Clifford the KOAs are way more than most places. That place looks like Disneyland for the kids, LOL

We were just in williams.  Yes their pricing has been high for some time.  We just went to the grand canyon. The RV parks like the koa was much cheaper. That was in April and May

As we traveled from the northeast then across route 40.  Our average night was 35 to 45 per night... we are 36 ft pulling another 20ft.

LOL If I took Pass Port America Dave I would be paying people to stay here  8) Circle Pines is a nice RV Park though KOA or not

Well then you'll pay the price?

:)All the KOA's we stayed at are way over priced and loud with kids all over the place, LOL not our cup of tea so to speak.

I guess if you want to stay in the RV park and not go anywhere there are a lot of things to do there.

We only use them as a place to use as home base and go out and explore the area.

Not sure what the attraction is to go to places where everyone else wants to go. Seems like the western and southwestern states are the desired destinations right now, with high prices to show for it.

Get out to the upper midwest where things are low-keyed, green, and much more reasonable. Lots of places where you won't need to fight to stay cool and where you can enjoy quiet campgrounds. Our favorite campground is about $50/night for a site overlooking the small quiet lake.

When it is 112 degrees in Mohave Valley and 80 for high in Williams it is a attraction Richard.I am not interested in the Mid West with the crappy weather I lived in the midwest and don't miss the weather, humdity or bugs flying or crawling type.WE found a place at Sedona on the river in Oak Canyon  with water falls for a week still was $300.00 a week

There is also Harvest Hosts. Farms, Museums, Winerys , etc. No charge for staying. Usually one night only. They appreciate buying a bottle or two of their product.😋 usually no hookups.
BoondockersWelcome has a variety of sites and may have electric and water depends. Stay time is anywhere from 2 to 5 days to a couple of weeks or month. Nice setup. You enter length of rig, slides and preferences. It will then weed out the smaller length locations. You check out the offerings and it will indicate their particular amenities that they have available. Btw, these aren't "campgrounds" per say. Some of the offerings are interesting and are rated by users. Very few, if any will offer 50 amp. or concrete pads.

My motorhome has two very large slides on our 36ft Tiffen Allegro Bay. With our trailer we are longer. All campground go by amp you need. I pay for the 50amp sites like you. I had the length like you. Left our motorhome in New Mexico.  I will drive it back later toward August.

As much as I love Williams I am not going to pay $105.00 a day,we have a spot on the highway at a USDA park on the lake going to the Grand Canyon with the Golden Age pass it costing us 7 bucks a night no electric or sewer but a dump and water when we leave Oak Canyon. We can drive the Trek to Circle Pines 24 ft long with 50 amp service it only cost $65.00 a day, you don't need AC in WIlliams anyways. There are several US park outside Williams with paved roads and concrete patios on the Lakes plus a lot of free BLM parking for 2 weeks right now we are just wanting a get away for the week ends and Circle Pines we could leave the RV drive home and not worry about when we left it

This is a serious question. Why do you need to stay in a place with all this stuff like 50amp service, sewer hookups, potable water hookups, etc? If you are on the journey and staying one night and then going again the next day, do you need all that stuff?

I really am serious as when needing just a place to park overnight I always scout a safe quiet place and the cost is ZERO.

If your rigs were fully off-grid capable would you change the criteria for where you stay?

Unfortunately, it seems that thousands of your closest friends have also discovered the benefits of places like this, and the owners of the campgrounds know it. Free market at work here. When the whole world wants to zig, you're going to have to pay the price to zig with them. Much cheaper to choose to zag for a while.

Once the post-pandemic fever wears off and people return to hotels and air travel things might return to a more normal spot, but I suspect the more desirable spots will remain higher than they used to be. Best to explore the roads less traveled.

Pandemic and demographics...

Notice nobody is talking demographics?

Baby Boom Echo is bang smack in the middle of this, and causing chaos, same as the Boomers...

Some of this is not going to let up...

Happy coaching!

You nailed it BW campgrounds are booked till late Sept even in Boise Id.We are not set up for off grid we can get by for 4 days at the most  but not without generator time .I know KOA cost more  but here in the mountains all camp grounds in the peak season are about the same in price. We seldom spend the night in campgrounds when traveling from point A to B Don that is not a problem,we will make it work we have for 50 years but it's getting harder now days

didnt help with Canada closed this year and trickle out news every month as to opening date. Probably hundreds now travelling around out west instead, adding to the load. How many are staying in campgrounds and zooming for work if they have cell signal. How many there hiding out from pandemic.

Good point. Unfortunately even though the infection numbers are much better & going in the right direction - ie: in USA anyway, it is going to be longer than the pandemic was on us to return to a state of normalcy and even then will be much different than we've known.... Time to adjust to a new era. Memories are our greatest asset as they can bring us to places in our lives that are gone in time... Rant over, carry on...
