I have not been able to attach pictures to my posts. Neither my Iphone or desktop. I gives an error: "Path cannot be empty"
Anyone else having the same issue?

Anything I attach that I took with my old digital 35 mil camera posts great. Anything I attach from my phone always comes out sideways. Just tried to attach one of each and got the same message you did. Guessing Gary or Phil will see this, or maybe PM them.

The site has improved in the last few years not long ago it was a real PITA using a hosting site to post a photo,I could never get that right
-
Ok, it's fixed.

We hate to complain Krash, we really do, but one from my camera, and one from my phone....
It is keeping people from posting pictures.
-
I see both pics on your post. You must be logged in to view attachments, guests can't see them.

I think he means one is rotated when posting a photo from his cellphone. ]

Generally not the site but in your phone or computer in the transfer some thing gets turned.
I have found if my Pictures comes out turned I figure how many turns it will take to come out right and go back to where I got it and turn it in my pictures and then delete the first one and put in the second and boom it will be correct. HTH :^

Krash,
David started this off with "Path can not be empty". In trying to help him, I tried to post and got the same thing. When you said "all better" I tried to post again and it worked. I see my pictures too! Point I was trying to make was pictures taken with smart phone turn sideways. I can send my phone pictures to anyone and anywhere and they do not go sideways. Every phone picture, including trying my wife's smart phone, turns picture sideways on BCM. Download pictures to the laptop and try to attach them that way. Still sideways only on BCM. We shouldn't have to turn them 3 times and re post.
By accident I discovered that pictures from a digital 35 mil do not turn sideways?
So that was my example Krash. Spot was taken with the digital camera, Bus was taken last month with my phone.
I have sniveled about this before, but I found a solution. If I have a leak in my engine or a fan belt question for the guys, I just pull out the camera.
The unfortunate thing: Most people have learned to take pictures with their phone these days. Many are reluctant to post because they see their pictures sideways and delete the post, or get teased about us needing to turn our laptops sideways to look at the picture. So they lose out on getting help. Pictures are very helpful for the mechanics to diagnose a problem. We all miss out on the education value. One of the primary purposes of this forum.
Is this hard to fix?
We can put a man on the moon....

Here’s a iPhone picture for testing purposes
Edit: interesting result being sideways. Let me try a pic with different orientation

Took this pic with my phone sideways
Edit: that worked great... looks like at the moment taking pictures with your phone laying down in the solution

Thanks Eagleguy for saying in half a sentence what took me....
(Oh shut up Ted)

The forum software platform is a real challenge to burrow into.
Ian over at BNO has less hair than he used to, due to Simple Machines...

Doesn't seem to happen over on BGM. :^

There's a mod that auto-rotates sideways images, I see it in package manager. Looks like we installed it but must have caused a problem because it's currently uninstalled. IIRC, if it can't rotate the pic (depends on image encoding) it provides an option to do it manually. Will have a look tonight. I don't use phone for photos, so no way for me to test it.
The original path error was due to host upgrading php to 8.0. Downgraded back to 7.4, that fixed it.

Ok, I've installed the mod, won't have time to play with it until tonight. Description here (https://www.simplemachines.org/community/index.php?topic=544111.msg3863972#msg3863972). Try it.

another from phone. Samsung s9 this pic is sideways. took it just now. Picture of plate was on same phone but not just taken.

This picture just taken with Samsung Galaxy S4
-
Perfect! Samsung Galaxy Note Ultra 5G.
-
I went ahead and checked the phone model Samsung S10e. The e probably means it takes sideways pictures.

Just walking into bb and took 2 pics. 1 upright 1 phone lying down

Hmm, looks like this is how it works. If mod detects EXIF encoding, it rotates sideways image automatically, if not it attaches image sideways. Then you can 'Modify' post, and you'll see an option to rotate the image in 'Attached' below the post editor. So you have to first attach it and post, if it's still assways, go back to post editor, rotate it, and repost. That's what I've done with the attached pic.

Krash,
I thank you for working on this. I worked with several computer systems in my long career with Uncle Sam. And I did go in and learn how to turn pictures, even experimented with turning my phone sideways like Eagle guy. But if you can make this just work from the system side it would be great.
Not everyone knows how or is willing to figure out the turn the picture thing. And when you start talking "EXIF encoding", many (including me) hear " I tawt I taw a puddy tat."
I have seen people write a nice blurb about their bus and then post 4 pictures to the "Post your bus here" site, only to delete it a few days later. Probably after they got frustrated trying to fix the photos. If someone breaks down and calls for help, with pictures, the expert wrench guys LIVE to help that person. Very frustrating for the " I'm stranded" guy that is sending sideways photos.
Again, I thank you from the bottom of my un encoded heart that you are studying it.
Best of luck with it and best regards,
Ted

Let’s try out the method krash described
Edit: that worked great. Very simple

will it be 6 months from now? let's see, how did that go....

It's not a problem with the forumware or the mod, it's to do with the OS on the device you're using. If your device adds EXIF data to the jpeg image header (not all do), the mod can read it and determine the native orientation of the image and rotate it correctly when it posts. In that case you don't have to do anything to post the image rightside up. If the jpeg does not include EXIF data, it will be posted in the orientation the pic was taken. In that case, you can go back into the post editor (click 'Modify'), and you'll see a select menu for each attachment that allows you to rotate the image and repost it correctly. As you can see, I've fixed the image in Tedsoldbus's post by rotating it 90° right.
The mod also resizes images to 750px max height or width, so if you attach a huge image without downsizing it (this was a problem on one of my forums), it will resize the image so it fits nicely in your post.
