Title: importance of the bumper stop next to shackle on eagle suspension
Post by: David Anderson on March 31, 2022, 08:59:37 AM
There is a bumper stop on the frame where my shackle attaches on the frame of the bus on the curb side only.  It appears that each shackle rests against each stop pretty much at all times.  One of the stops is broken off.  You can see it missing in the picture attached.
I just wonder how important this is.  I'm trying to come up with a way to fabricate some hard rubber to make one to replace it.

Any ideas?   Should I fix it?  You can see in the picture the gouge it makes in each shakle.  I guess this is to help the rear axle from swaying laterally while driving down the road.

Another question.  I think it best to replace the shackles while I have them off.  I've been trying to contact Sulastic to buy a pair for a week.  They don't return my calls, text, and I have had no reply from a query on their E place store either.  I haven't driven by the warehouse in San Antonio, but it looks like just an empty suite from the parking lot on Google maps.  Has anyone ever bought from them?

Thank you,

Ordered today.

I still need to figure out what to do with the missing rubber bump stop.  I can tell the rear end assembly presses against them really hard by the looks of my old shackles.

Aren't the torsion bars supposed to keep them off the bump stops normally?

I checked all of my Eagles, and I don't see bump stops as you have. Is your ride height correct? How high are you at the wheel arch on the inside curve? Somebody might have added those bumpers. I don't see them in the Eagle manuals. If the shackle is banging that area, something is not right. Maybe a repair was done to the mounting frame and it's not aligned correctly. The guy on eBay that sells those shackles gets them from Dina in Mexico. Nothing wrong with the parts, but he has jacked the price up recently. He gives the impression that there are only a few left, yet the listing is constantly renewed (for years).

Bump stops on the curb side of Eagles were found on transit models and like the Houston Metro Eagles for right hand turns, the Houston Metro Eagles were a different breed even the engine air intake is different on the Metro Eagles

That's interesting to know.  I thought they were to help with sway on the rear axle in addition to the 2 sway bars underneath.  They normally dont' ride against the shackle body.  I guess they bump on turns.

I found a rubber block to make a new one.  I'll go ahead and fabricate it and match the other end of the torsion bar.  It sounds like they aren't that important anyway.
