You don't do this in a house, why do it in a coach?

The corridor to my bedroom runs along the right side of the coach, giving me a 6' x 7' bath instead of a phone-booth-with-flush

Yes we had a separate room for the head. It is very small, the size of a phone booth ;D. And yes we do have that set up at two of our bath's at the house. All the rest, at the house, are the standard way.

Once again, yes, we would certainly do it that way again. It is great. The shower, and head room fit in 6' 3" of space. Yes the head room is tight, but hey, how much time are you planning on spending in there?

My final word? Go for it. We have really liked our setup.

God bless,

John

How about a little slide out Bob? :D :D ;) Actually my john is not in a seperate room. It's part of the bedroom. One can close off the divider to the front of the bus for privacy.

good plan if you can do it, make sure you have elbow room for the reach around.  Also BCM rack above splashline :D

All a matter of preferences.  I prefer the toilet being in a separate room.  That way it is available even if someone else is taking a shower.  I believe those that go for a separate enclosure usually loose less space to the bathroom facilities.  Ours is a 35 footer.  I have noticed that some 40's do not seem to have much more interior space than we do.  One reason is often a larger bathroom.

That is one thing I new I wanted when I started the conversion. I have a separate room, approximately 2.5'x4' with the pot sitting in one corner at a angle. I am a reader and have plenty of room. If I was doing it again I wouldn't change a thing.      BUR

Most houses don't have the toilet and shower in seperate rooms so why do it in a bus?  I suppose in a house you often have a second bathroom available if someone is showering.

There is a tred in some of the larger S&S motorhomes to have two bathrooms, or at least two toilets.  It seems a waste of space to me.

Our toilet, shower and wash basin are all in separate locations. I wouldn't want it any other way.

The toilet is next to the shower/tub and the basin is across the hall next to the bedroom.

This allows three people to use them instead of being jammed into one of those little cubby holes that barely hold two. That is the craziest thing I ever saw.

Since you're doing it you can make it any size you want, you will regret making it too small. Bigger is better.

Ours has a simple folding door, works great.

It doesn't matter what homes or SS or others have, make it the way you want it. Who needs to be like all the others??

I'll just throw my 2 cents in, FWIW.

Only have 35' so went with a big fat shower and separate toilet room. And ditched the vanity & bathroom sink completely. Put a medicine cabinet  (nice looking wood with mirror ) over the kitchen sink, which does double duty.

Probably no good with kids aboard, but works for me (I seldom brush my teeth when doing dishes).

this is a X entertainer coach and one of the things left in bus is the Butt Hutt with a minature sink and cabinets pretty neat looking...thinking about moving back to be infront of bedroom on curb side and putting a dressing vanity with sink on drivers side.. shower  placement to be determined...102 wide with raised roof so shower could go on outside wall..I think this will be the last one...so want to get it right! I'm in no hurry as I have coach to use now..thanks again.....will be other questions to be discussed on what works and doesn't

I liked the idea of having a large bathroom with the john as part of it so getting dressed after a shower I could use it for a stool to set on. I , like someone else put a hallway on the side to accomplish this . Jerry

Bob,
I especially liked the idea of a slide "to expand the space when needed!" ;).

Also remember like you mentioned it's 102" wide and on top of that 45' long so you have an extra 5-10' more than most to play with. Just be sure to make it large enough for the BCM rack! ;D

Then again, you can make the bathroom a single large space so you can put the Bowflex in there too.

I am still wowed by the walkthru.  Done right it is the most efficient in space utilization.  I look at the side isle configs and they miss the 8 to 10 feet of storage/cupboards/washer.  All the floor space in the walk thru seems to do double duty.

If I were doing a coach smaller than 40 foot I would use the arrangement found in the old ????, forgot the name, looked like a old Winnie but more BLUNT and Neanderthal. They put the toilet in the shower and it functioned as a shower "stool" as well as a Stool.  Toilets are water proof, did ya know?  In  their config there was a small sink and cupboard under that was all waterproof.  They packed the entire bath into a very very small foot print and had a exhaust fan to do double duty.  No shower curtain or shower door needed as the entry door was the privacy.  Rest assured that NO ONE could use the stool while another was showering with there being a fight so you all had to cooperate.  For one person????  I am with Nellie....I would plan in the kitchen sink to do double duty and gain storage or ???  And I have never thought about brushing my teeth whilst doing dishes. let alone tried it.  Good point tho.  AND there has to be a FAN incorporated into the design.  No potty in the bedroom for me but to each his own.

To each their own. It depends on so many variables such as how many people on board, how well these people know each other, length of trips, daily activitie schedules, etc.  Our coacg has an offset center aisle walk through batchroom with a door at each end (bedroom door has rarely been closed). In the bathroom area are the shower (with glass door and one glass wall, vanity/sink, toilet. and all closets (18" linen and 8' of clothes).  This plan works for us, but may not work for you. We designed our coach for cocktails for 6, dinner for 4 and sleeps 2.  Jack

Wet bathes are used in many smal RVs.  I think it would suck to have your toilet wet several hours a day or have to dry it every time you shower.

Personally, I think you would have to be pretty cramped for space to consider one of these in a 35 foot or longer bus.

We once had a 24 foot Pace Arrow that had the toilet in the shower.  Yes, it is a very efficient use of space.  However, although I am for taking up a minimum of space for the bathroom since one does not really spend that much time there, I think that configuration is unnecessary in a 35' + bus.  It is usable, but somewhat cramped and unpleasant.  Actually, it is not so bad for use of the toilet, but really does kill taking a comfortable shower.

RJ,

The Cortez was an excellent guess and does generally meet my description.....but!  This one looked like a Winnie in every respect except the front.  Where the Winnie has two flat panel windshields that come together at an angle....the other has two flat panels and the windscreen is flat across the front.  Where the Winnie has those aerodynamic front roof edge arrangements......the other simply rolls the roof edge over towards the front and terminates at the top of the windshields..COMMANDER that was it.  Best laid out coach I ever saw and was the most efficient at space utilization in its day.  Two cutting boards in the kitchen standard...WOW.  Bed was crosswise in the one I looked at.  Stopped making them in the late seventies or so.

Bryan,
Here are a couple photos.  The vanity and toilet are across the aisle from the closets. The toilet and linen closet are to the right of the vanity. When sitting on the toilet you are facing the shower.  I will try to get a couple better photos later today.  The closet photo was taken before the tile floor was installed.  Jack

My layout is identical to Jack's, walkthough, two doors, closets on passenger side, toilet, vanity, shower on drivers side.  Black tank is directly below the units.  Easy as anything can be.

I went with the separate toilet/sink and shower for several reasons.

1) I wanted front to rear access while under way even if the toilet was in use

2) I wanted a contained area that would allow efficient vapor trail removal, if you know what I mean

3) My phase 1 layout (bunks) was with the intent of carrying 6 to 12 people so access becomes a real issue with the higher number of people

4) My phase 2 layout will have a much bigger bathroom and a full sized bedroom which will be more comfortable and more convenient

For me, the driver of the decision is the intended use and the access needed as a result of the use.

We travel with a minimum of 4, so all the reasons Greg stated apply to our gang.

I am so glad that we tried out this layout as it works PERFECT for US.

What about the shower and toilet in two seperate compartments with each having a sink?  That way one can be shaving and whatever after showering.  I suppose the shower area might either get too big or too crowded with a sink.

My concern about not having a sink in the same room as the toilet would getting germs on the door handle from dirty hand if one has to use a sink outside the throne room.

My travel trailer had the sink seperate from the shower/toilet.  It also had a sliding door so the door to the toilet/shower area could be left open.  My knees hit the door when on the toilet so I left the toilet area door open when using the facilities and just closed the sliding door instead.

Personally, I can't stand hand sanitizers.  They make my hands feel slimey.  I always wash my hands with soap and water when I use the toilet unless I have no other choice.  I don't particularly like sunscreen either, but I don't want sunbuun so I use it.

I guess if you don't mind hand sanitizer one could save a lot of space by not having a sink with the toilet.

We like having a full size sink in the bathroom, but one could look for mini sinks too.  These are not vendor links but just give ideas.

Just put a small piece of toilet paper on the door handle and open.

Sanitizers are doing the same thing that antibiotics have done, making a new generation of  highly resistant monster germs.

Sorry, but this talk of how to make it from the toilet to a sink while limiting contamination is depressing.  There are marine sinks that are only 11" round.  I bet you could even find or design one that is stowable.  I read an article about testing drinking water served in New York restaurants.  There was a much higher possibility of the presence of fecal chloroforms in the water that was served with a twist of lemon.  Whether is was from the harvest or restaurant employees not washing may not be totally clear, but the point is these bacterias are feisty.  I do not know that basic sanitary facilities are the place to compromise.

Gus,

The sanitizers have alcohol in them to kill germs.  That won't allow a germ to build up resistance or we would have done ourselves in long ago with wine.  The slimy feeling, unpleasant to me as well, is from the glycerin hand lotion they mix in to make it more attractive.  That evaporates after a minute but I, like you don't like it.  I use it though.  Here, smell my fingers :P :-\ :-[ ;D ;D

The sanitizers at the VA here put out a shot of isopropyl alcohol...straight and simple.  Every Dr. washes their hands prior to leaving, and I mean carefully, and then gets a hit from the hand sanitizer machine on their hands.  They must have a tub of Jergan's somewhere.

I use the stuff every time I pass a machine anywhere.

My 2 centavos

The bottom cabinet is hinged on the bottom and we store spray bottles of cleaner, holding tank chemicals, etc. It is also an access to plumbing, electrical, and ProHeat "stuff".  Jack
