Title: South East Bus Nuts upcoming spring rally
Post by: Mike in GA on February 24, 2010, 02:42:33 PM
I think this has been mentioned some while ago, but just a reminder that our spring rally - April in the Carolinas - will be held once again at beautiful Palmetto Cove Rally Park in Cleveland SC (west of Spartanburg) on April 22-25, 2010.
This rally is making a special effort to involve the more northly SEBN members from the Carolinas, north GA, etc., and is aimed at welcoming all bus enthusiasts and wannabees whether SEBN members or not. Last year we had 32 coaches at this pristine mountain park, and this time we're shooting for many more.
Those northern members involved in parts of this event so far include JR Lynch, Tom Hamrick, Marty & Debby Nixon, Howard Best, Gary LaBombard, Kyle Brandt, Bill Gibson, Leroy and Lila Ashe, Ed and Anne Gallant and Don and Sarah Riddle, and Minerva Bullock among others.
Watch this space for more info and registration details. The reg fee will be $39, plus $20 per night camping.
     More as it develops!
Mike and Carol Heron, Rally Hosts

Mike,
Last year was our first bus rally & we had a blast. Really look forward to this year as we will already know some folks that we met last year. It was great meeting people from different walks of life who had the same interests in mind. Even if the bus has to limp in there we'll be there... Oh wait, did that last year. :o

Definately a rally to attend. Between all the great food, knowledgeable people there and the beautiful views from the campground, if you are anywhere in the area, try to attend.  Jack

My wife and I are putting this rally on our calendar, we plan to drop down from Canada and say Hi.  Of course, we are at this instant winning the gold medal match in Womens Hockey, so I hope we will still be welcome...end of second period, it's all still to play for!

I would appreciate any additional information that might be available, on the SEBN's, the rally, any activities that might be planned, advice on if I should bring a Toad, etc.  We've never been to a bus rally before...

Cheers, Brian

Your own toad will be convenient, but there will be several of us there with cars, so getting a ride somewhere will be easy.  ;D  8)

Hello everyone,

For anyone that has not been to Palmetto Cove Campground Rallies, located at Cleveland, SC here is some video links from Youtube I posted about the South East Bus rally held there in April last Year.  There is 3 video's concerning that rally and one more video of sights within 5 miles of the Palmetto Cove Campground.  As stated above, the campground scenery is something that you just want to deeply breath in and remember so you have something to look forward to in making plans to attend again. Bring your camera's.

I predict this rally to be one of the biggest for SEBN and hope you will plan to attend, if so please notify Mike & Carol Heron of your expected attendance so they can make plans you will thoroughly enjoy.  This is a lot of work for them so please commit yourself in your attendance to make their job easier and you will surely be very satisfied that you did.

Here are the 3 videos of last years (Southeast Busnuts Rally) held at Palmetto Cove and one extra video from a rally we also enjoyed at Palmetto Cove sponsored by Kyle Brandt, the video has views of neighborhood  attractions very close to Palmetto Cove Campground.

SouthEast Busnuts Rally, Video #1, April 2009, Palmetto Cove Campground, Cleveland, SC (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dEOIfHaperQ#normal)

Southeast Busnuts Rally, Video #3, April 2009, Palmetto Cove (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jXSkcbFJJKk#normal)

This is the video from (Kyle's "Non-Bus Rally"), held in October of 2009, This video is of area attractions near Palmetto Cove Campground:

Don't delay, come to Palmetto Cove in April to play,
Take care, Hope this information helps you decide.

Kyle

Just organize bus races to the top of the mountain. Could be a great hill climb just like in british cars.

Right, you & your souped-up & hot rodded 4104 would easily beat most bikes up there!

Wait a minute, don't british cars require frequent road side repairs? The road shoulders ain't wide enough for buses, so we can't have a hill climb "just like british cars" .  :o  ::)  ;D

Hey there Brian and others interested in the April in the Carolinas rally! Thanks for the nice posts. We will welcome you with open arms, despite Canada's hockey victory!
As soon as our club newsletter editor gets the basic schedule and rate info out to our own membership, which should be any day, I will post all  the details (schedule of events, driving instructions, reg form, etc.), on the BCBB for all to see.
For now, know that things will begin as early as Wednesday the 21st with a light dinner. The rally fees are $39. (US) per coach -  two people, $20. ea additional person, not including camping, which is only $20. per night, full hook-ups.
Cheers!
Mike
PS: Brian, I was an amateur hockey ref (AHAUS) for 15 years in MD, CO and CT.

Just can't wait!   ;D

We'll have a pickin session too...long as it don't snow or something!

Kyle, what's the hall availability looking like for Friday or Saturday?  Just in case the weather doesn't cooperate...which it hasn't for the last 4 months.   I want to de-winterize the bus, but the weather dudette is calling for snow again Tuesday and lows all week in the teens and low twenties...???    >:(

Maybe Jack and Paula will bring some of that Florida weather up with them!  Florida Sunshine!   8) :o :)

Just to make you feel better we had to close the door and windows on the bus a little while ago because we had a rain storm come thru the Foothills area of Yuma. The temp dropped from in the 80's to the lower 60's.  We did get a very nice double rainbow out of it though.   ;D

Someone may have posted Palmetto's web address, here it is if not:

http://palmettocove.com/ (http://palmettocove.com/)

Kyle can add to this, but I don't believe that they take reservations.  There's plenty of sites so not to worry.
The only requirement is that whatever camping gizmo you reside in must be fully self contained.  Since most sites have water, power and dump, "self-contained" is easy to accomplish.
There are no bathhouses or tent camping areas.

Should those that use maps and GPS and like what appears to be shortcuts, and arriving from the NW, unless you have remarkable brakes and are accustomed to driving in the "old" mountain roads, avoid coming down Hwy 276 out of Brevard.   Use the interstate.   Caesar's Head is interesting in a car, it'll be a challenge in most coaches.
Kyle and Jon can advise regarding the best way in from various directions.   Hwy 11 is a good road.

For two cents I'd dewinterize the bus this weekend....but after this cold winter  >:(, I'll give it another couple of weeks...

As a reminder, I-40 near the NC/TN line is still closed...however expected at least based on info from two weeks ago supposed to reopen the 1st week of April.
Check before committing coming from the Knoxville area.  However if coming from KY and TN, take I-81 to I-26 in Johnson City, TN and come on down the hill!

It's great that there's wide interest in this spring rally!
Two highlights include the Friday walking tour of the BMW plant down in Spartanburg, SC. There is a $5 extra charge p.p. on this, and sign-ups are limited to 40. See me upon arrival at Palmetto to get on the list. No open toed shoes or heels, ladies. Thanks to Tom Hamrick for setting this up!
The other sightseeing highlight is Saturday's vineyard tour, tasting and luncheon. Modest extra charges here too, depending on whether you want just the tour, the tasting and/or the light lunch. Again, see me upon arrival to get on the list. Thanks to Ed and Ann Gallant for the arrangements!
See you in Palmetto Cove!
Mike and Carol Heron
PS:  Thanks guys for the updates to driving instructions!

We're firming up our plans to attend.  I have to finish installing the twin beds where the queen bed used to be, but that will not take long.  Other than that and an oil change, I guess none of the other work is going to be done till we get back!  Do we need to pre-register for the rally, or sign up and pay when we get there?  I noted that there are no reservations at the park, so I guess that is OK.  We do want to tour the BMW plant, I run a BMW engine in one of my race cars, so that would be cool (a 1972 engine, not a new one, so I won't be looking for spare parts...).

Anyway, we are close enough that you can put us on the list, Brian Evans and Catherine Gill, and a 1980 MCI MC-5C

Just a reminder that bus nuts are strongly encouraged to register ahead for the April 20-25 April in the Carolinas Rally. We're asking for everyone who plans to come to get their reg'n in by April 10th, so we can adequately prepare enough food, prizes, etc. The rates again are $39. per coach (two people), and $20 for each extra person. This is exclusive of camping, which is $20 per night, payable to the campground.
You can copy and paste the below registration form if you can't find the real one on the Rallies and Events section of this site:

What is this winterize stuff.

If you have a good all weather coach you don't have to do that.

Just a few light bulbs and no worrys.

ps I am getting the travel itch. Hope to see everyone this month "well I may be a few days early on April" at the busnuts rally.

maybe Wilma will let me go and come with me.

It is no secret that I don't have an all weather coach.  :(
However, during mosquito season, I know who to park beside. . .  ;D

Well placed lightbulbs work well if you have reliable power - which is something I didn't have when it was 11F while going up I75 at 65 - 70 mph Friday night/ Saturday morning.  :o

It was nice & comfy inside the suburban, but when you stopped for gas or to 'check the fridge', damn, it was cold!
When I got home Saturday morning just after 8am, I did drain the fresh water tank & the water heater & turn on the heaters & light bulbs. There didn't seem to be any frozen piping as water still flowed out all the faucets, but the water that I drained on the ground did freeze before it made it's way out from under the camper.

It is a factory built camper, so the plumbing was places with minimizing cost taking priority over ease of draining them. From the looks of it, they were using up all the scrap pieces of plastic tubing they had. I've never seen so many fittings in one place!

I pressure checked the water supply yesterday. YEA! no leaks!  ;D ;D ;D ;D

I finally got around to making a water supply adapter for the camper so I can turn the water off at the camper (I'm 100 feet away from the house faucet)  & also have an outside faucet at the camper to share water or wash up if needed.

Now to wash off the mud that splatters on the camper when it rains due to the lack of walls on the bus port.  ;)

Absolutely, as long as it is self contained. Because this is a rally park, with no shower facilities, state law requires all RVs to be self contained.  Jack

Well as usual some changes have taken place! The Eagle has had a change of heart and decided NOT to go! Might pick up another to take his place, an MCI!

I'm still hoping I find time to fix my awning, fix an oil leak that was JUST discovered on this past weekend outing and have my new tires installed!

FWIW, I would never recommend Zip-Dee awnings again although they are very well built and top of the line as for quality, they suck for operation! Mine is about a year old and already has developed a rip, not to mention a bad bow in the main tube and that will definitely be hard to straighten!

The tires are still on hold due to another deal that was passed on to me. THAT dealer has yet to call back with "the deal" so I might be back to the original dealer!

The oil leak has yet to be determined how bad!

I just heard from Mike Heron and we presently have 32 paid reservations for the rally and another 10-15 that have expressed an interest in attending, but have not sent in their registration forms. Registrations are due by Saturday, 4/10. Registration forms need to be received if you want to be assured of meals.  If you have not sent in your registration form yet, please do so ASAP. Jack

Dallas,
We are trying to make sure those that frequent this BB that have said they were coming but have not registered yet "get this message" so we will have enough catered meals for them. We don't want them to show up and then tell them "sorry, you cant eat with us"  It will become "Unstcky" on Sunday as the deadline is then for registrations.  I thought this was easier than "Bumping" it a couple times a day.  Jack

Maybe because of the place where it is being held  . . .  ;D

Actually, I think it is a good idea to sticky any organized rally the last week or two before registrations are due to assist in the planning & catering.

Great ideas have to start somewhere. So in the future, if anyone wants their rally stickyed, they should contact a moderator & explain their needs. This board is so helpful to this hobby!  8)

Hello Everyone,

I have submitted the other 4 videos I documented of the1st. Eagles International Bus Rally held at Santee State Park, Santee, SC.  I will attempt to put the url so you can go directly to Youtube to see the videos but I also need some feed back it you have the time.  I also will include the (Still Photo  Video) I posted a few days earlier so that you can compare if you would prefer having the videos in camcorder form such as the 4 I submitted today or in the still photo form such as I did a few days ago.

As Manny knows this is a real job to do and doing it both ways takes several days, believe me.

Here is the link for the Still Photo's if you have not seen this video as yet:

Here is the links for the 4 videos I submitted as of today:

Many thanks to Cindy for making posting these URL’s easier.  If you don’t mind, please give me a little feed back on which you prefer.

I noticed I still have a lot of shaking going on with the camcorder so I have to work on that after all this is solved.
Thanks,
Gary

Note:
Movie #3 &#4 may be a little grainy for a little while, they are still being processed.  Check on these in about an hour.

I'm going to be coming down either I77 or I79 to this rally, I plan to leave tuesday morning and arrive at the camp site around 10 or 11 am Thursday morning.  That means I am looking for overnights either south of Pittsburg on I79, or just north of Parkersburg on I77, and again around Johnson City or a little north of that for the next night.  Any idea's?  this is my spring vacation, so on the way down at least I'll try to avoid truck-stops and the like.

thanks, Brian

BTW, got our confirmation yesterday, registered with the campsite this morning.

Great job on the pictorials from the recent Eagle International Rally.  The bus nut community is fortunate to have someone with your talent and passion for this art. Glad you are doing more of the same later this month at the SEBN rally in SC.

Things are looking up today. Better than what yesterday returned as we were on our way to the bus shop to do some odds and ends when a car came to a sudden stop in front of Susan and I! Yes we were on our 2008 Harley Fatboy. Well after sliding the tires about 8 feet, we smacked right into the rear of the car. Apparently the car we hit stopped very suddenly due to a car in front of them that made a sudden stop for NO apparent reason and then decided to not stop and take off. It all happened pretty quick. I never dropped the bike and we both stayed on some how, but it sure gave us both a jolt to say the least. Susan after wards passed out (always does) ended up going to the ER and suffered a dislocated and broken pinky. I got nothing yesterday but today some very sore muscles in my upper arms. The funny thing is, I was wearing blue jeans and now my seat has a permanent imprint of the jean material in the seat! Anyway, the bike suffered a crushed front fender and two bent chrome forks. The $1500.00 custom wheel and tire survived as did the head light! Go figure! Working frantically trying to locate replacement parts so we can take it with us to SC. My daughter plans on being there with her husband and two kids which are twins and I have never met. They are 6 years old. Tells you how long its been since I have seen my daughter. She already has plans on staying in Pickens and everyone is excited to be there.

Trying to get the bus road ready was a challenge by itself but now the bike has really pushed the envelope!

We were able to get the oil and filter changed today on the bus so that's one step closer. I have located new forks at $450.00 but still looking on a fender. The latter is not really a necessity but it just doesn't look the same without it!

It's sure nice having a bus shop in town with a friend that lets you use it on weekends. He's a biker too and I think he wants my bike fixed so I can take it with me so he's helping me to get my bus and bike going asap!

Ace-
Quite a close call. Glad you and Susan are OK.
Let me know when you are firmed up for the SEBN rally in SC, and, if before Thursday, I will go ahead and register you. You can pay me when you arrive. Also in previous posts you mentioned the possibility of other buses joining you. Ditto them.

I will most likely be coming and going for visits and campfire chats.

I may bang on Uncle Ned's Bus after he goes to sleep just for meanness :P

On the other hand, since he's off the rat poison, he may have the old sign up about knocking and rocking and what have you :o :D

Just want to remind a few fiends that lurk on this board about the killer dog that inhabits "HUGGY BEAR".

He eats pit bulls for breakfast, and doberman pincers for lunch. He also named for " in my opinion" the best basketball player to come out of carolina. And that is north not south.   lol

Well, we are in Lakeview RV Park, Bluff City TN, three miles from sunny Bristol Motor Speedway, having spent last night at the lovely Stonewall Resort in WV.  All is fine on the trip so far, my clutch is still way too stiff, and we should be at the Cove in time for lunch...

See you tomorrow!

Apologies to Gary L!!  Considering the weather forcast, two dogs that needed walking--rain or otherwise, and the fact that Terri was home alone....I added to Gary's chores.  Gary graciously agreed to assume my ticket selling duties.
I sorta slipped out quietly about 1100 Saturday morning.
Had a good time visiting and eating!   Especially eating...I'd drive over to Palmetto for Dave Lang's sausage...reason enough!
Got home just ahead of the rain.   T helped clean up the inside of the bus and it was back in the barn by 1500.
I'll garuntee that I had more fun than anyone else!  Got to have a picking party on Friday night!  Perfect weather, a throw-down good time!
Good to see Uncle Ned and Wilma out and about!
Sign me up for next year!   Kyle, sign me up for the October Non-Rally too!
Mike and the SE Busnuts had a great, well organzed rally and great attendance!   Good many folk from a long way off...Ace and his crew, and maybe we had a Canadian?
Palmetto Cove CG is a super nice location for bus rally gatherings.
Hope to see some of y'alls at Gene's Wade Rally May 22 weekend (Near Fayetteville just off of I-95).  We're planning on attending.  The KOA CG is also an excellent location for a bus gathering.  The CG owners are very acommadating and they give us a large enclosed hall very close to the coaches for meals and kicking back.
We'll be in Mt. Airy, NC first weekend in June and Morganton, NC July 4th week for the "Red White and Bluegrass Festival."  If anyone is nearby, look us up!

JR and Terri

Final count was 55 coaches and 131 people. I think all had a great time, not only at the rally but sightseeing in one of the most beautiful areas in the Southeast.  It was great to renew old friendships and make new ones.  The SE Busnuts April rally, 2011 will once again be held at Palmetto Cove with Gary & Linda LaBombard hosting it.  Plan now for a great time next April.
Yes, We did have one couple you came all then way from Canada.  Jack

Thanks for all the positive comments about this past week's rally. And thanks, James, for posting the photos. I am sure that Gary LaBombard will add to the mix.
Special thanks to my Co-Hosts Leroy and Lila Ashe, Don and Sarah Riddle, and Gary and Linda LaBombard. Gary seranaded us on several occasions. Others carrying a great deal of weight were Ann Gallant for the fabulous Monkey Bread breakfast Friday, Tommy Hamrick for that afternoon's sold-out tour of the Spartanburg BMW plant,  Kyle Brant for the popular baked potato extravaganza, Debbie Spear, Marty Nixon and Howard and Ellen Best for the Krusteaz pancake breakfast Saturday, Ed Gallant for that afternoon's winery tour, tasting and luncheon, and Howard for his later Tech Talk. Minerva Bullock led a 35 member recipe swap for the ladies. Many hands make light work they say, and just about everyone pitched in. Our Saturday nite catered dinner of Carolina roast beef and roasted chicken attracted nearly 140 people, and our contestants for the Not Nearly Newlywed game after dinner were all good sports (even you, Ace!).
As Jack Conrad said, next year's April in the Carolinas will be hosted by Gary and Linda, and their dates will be during the week after Easter, starting about April 25th. With 30 coaches last year, and 55 last week, maybe we'll get up over 65 this next time!
     Thanks again everyone!

Susan, Bud and I just got home to a sort of cool sunny Fl at 6pm and it feels good to be here! Had a great run with our bus as she ran flawlessly! Temps went up and down thru the hills but stayed normal on the flats! Gonna be looking for a radiator soon! Travelled with good friends which made it less boring on the slabs! Got home to find a leaky rear main seal! Oh well, nothing last forever! Thanks to all of the many bus nut friends that chatted and to those of you that made it a point of speaking, it made me feel good to know that I am, and was welcome! Also seeing my daughter after a long 12 years and meeting my 2 wonderful grand kids made the whole trip a real treat! Can't wait to see them AND ya'll again!

Well, Catherine and I - the "Canuckians" - have to say thank you for making us feel very welcome and at home in the south, and say how much we enjoyed and appreciated visiting with you all!  With the weather forecast on Saturday evening for much rain, possible tornadoes, and us parked in a low spot with an inch of standing water around our rear wheels already, we (and our neighbour) pulled up stakes and left at 7 pm while most were still at dinner.  No doubt just needless worry, but we rolled down 11 to I26 and spent the evening on asphalt in a really very nice Kangaroo truck stop, complete with very well priced diesel the next morning.  The new Hella's earned their keep in the dark and the driving rain!

Sunday night was a KOA in Whytheville, VA, Monday night was an excellent state park - Stonewall Resort, WVA with an executive retreat center and an excellent restaurant, and a herd of white-tail deer roaming around  the camp, and tonight a nice KOA on the shores of Lake Erie in New York (the state parks aren't open yet up here).  I'm not rushing the ride home, and working on the driving skills.  A lot of wind today, gusting to probably 35 mph cross winds, and I learned to stop correcting the steering and just let the bus roll.  The cabin rocked almost violently sometimes, but the vehicle tracked true, very reassuring.   We'll be home tomorrow with some great memories.

Cheers, Brian and Catherine.  We'll look forward to seeing you all again some time!

bevans6 Bryan I think that I was parked to the left you at the rally(blue and purple 5a) and I understand your concern at the weather,it looked like it was going to be bad. That night it poured the rain, about 3.5in I think, but it wasn't that bad. Good sleeping weather. I hope you and your wife enjoyed the rally. I know I've met some of the best people in the world at these rallies and always made to feel welcome.

Looking forward to seeing you'all again   Glen&Patsy Rice
