Title: miter box seal leaking
Post by: tmathis on June 08, 2010, 06:50:35 AM
just got back from a short trip to the Texas coast. When I pulled up to the house I noticed a leak around the left output shaft on the miter box (the side that drives the alt.and fan). Anyone ever replace these seals before? If so advice and perhaps part number(s) would be greatly appreciated. I am considering replacing that bearing as well while I have it all apart.
PS this is a 71 Eagle with an 8v71, no mfg. markings on the gearbox.

Tony, those are off the self bearing and seals you have four that box you have on a 8v71 is the hardest to rebuild the ones from a V 6 are a snap if you live in North Texas call Sonnie Gray at 903-815-2141.If you need help we have a tech section on the Eagles board to help Eagle owners www.eaglesinternational.net (http://www.eaglesinternational.net)

good luck

Tony, I hate to say it but mine leaked too. I was at NAPA getting some filters and came across a seal leak sealer, don't know the brand because the label is missing. Just followed the directions and it hasn't leaked since. I know that's not the proper way to fix a leak, but in my case it did the trick for now. I just haven't had the time to do it right. ;)

I've got my fire suit on! ;D

Paul, you would have been better off to let it leak, that stuff swells the seal to make it tighter and all it does is cut a grove into the sealing surface.
I have 8v92 here the guy put a quart seal stop leak ( major brand) in not one shaft that doesn't a wear ring on is good and that is the crankshaft not trying to scare you but that stuff is bad news.

good luck

Clifford, I knew I'd hear from ya.  ;)

I know using a quick fix is not the best way, but it's done now. I was just sick and tired of watching it leak. On the crank side, it's attached to some kind of coupler which is tied to the shaft on the mitre box. I figure I'll get around to tearing it apart someday. My class schedule just doesn't allow much free time! ;)

Shoot, we sit most of the time anyway and it's not in Becky's plan for the bedroom remodel! ;)

Andy, What is your VIN#? My parts book might have the seals you need listed. At least it might give you a head start.

Here are a couple of pics from mine. I know yours is an 05, but the 01 is very similar. For identification purposes only.

Mine was leaking (seeping) a few years ago.

It wasn't just the seal. The shaft had a small groove in it.

I was unable to locate what I needed so removed the seal, mic'ed the shaft and went to a bearing and seal store. We were able to match the seal. I ordered a crankshaft shim like the ones we used to repair chevy smallblock cranks with. Took it to a muffler shop and had it stretched to match the mic of the shaft. It came with the epoxy to glue it to the shaft

It's lasted several years. A lot of miles and shows no sign of seeping.

I also drained the box and refilled it with Lucas.

Paul, I just had to moderate you there buddy LOL Your mitre is a little different than his the main shaft goes through the box on his with a coupling and a balancer on the back the V6's use your style, don't ask why Eagle did that because I have no answer they just did.
His Morse coupling is probably going bad coming off the engine when they start to go bad  it will usually start the mitre box seals to leak have you checked yours lol

good luck

The coupling still looks pretty solid. Our problem is the bus sits for long periods and the seals dry out. And who knows how old they are  :(

When I was looking at my manual today, they looked the same. They did have different seal numbers. I better get my glasses changed. ;D

If it had happened on the way to the coast stopleak might have been my answer, glad I didn't go there. Yes my gearbox has shafts on 4 sides with a balancer at the rear. When the rain stops here I am going to tear into it. I appreciate the advice. I'll post again if I get stuck!
