Title: Tow dolly
Post by: Ednj on April 13, 2006, 06:54:19 PM
I just did a search for Tow Dolly and nothing showed up.
I read a post about tow dollies asking how we liked them.
Well to night I had to go tow a broken down car for a family member (everyone wants to use it).
All went well until I got home and put it back behind the camper.
As I was pushing it back to hook up the coupler one of the wheels hit something (like a 4x4) and pushed the dolly back forward.
Yes that is right where my pinky was between the coupler and the bumper, man does that hurt.
Did I mention I was going away tomorrow?

They are great for that purpose.

However, they are really a pain in the a$$ when out on the road and hooking  and unhooking and unable to back up and where to put the dolly at a campground sometimes. And if you get in a place where you can not turn around then you have to unhook the toad then unhook the tow dolly and manually get it out of the way and turn it around.

I had one many years ago and after one cross country round trip from California I immediately got rid of it.

Hey, I think I just made post 1300 but I do not know how to check!

I have a demco and i love it, never a problem, just have to watch where you are going and try to avoid backing, but i have backed it very short distance ok

Dan, is that with the toad on it?

Yes it is possible to back short distances sometimes depending on the dolly. The worst (or only) kind I have tried the axle of the dolly swivels and it wants to go one way and the toad wants to go the other way after a few feet.

I agree with the group that think the dolly is a pain.  I also had the Demco and after one trip to the east coast I converted it to a box trailer and gave it to my son.  Main problem is what to do with it when in camp.  Lots of spots aren't big enough to keep it attached and even if you do it is always in the way.  The backing problem is also a factor but 4 down doesn't back up well either.  But at least with 4 down my wife can drive the truck out of the way.

Backing 4 down is a big NO NO with every tow bar I have seen. It is OK however to start the towd and PULL the bus back for short distances!! Will really help you out in that damn tight spot!
