Title: 98 prevost front bumper can I push it?
Post by: robertglines1 on May 03, 2011, 07:42:25 AM
I need to push it backwards about 50 ft have brakes released on gravel-  no engine. Question is Can I push it square on front bumper rubbers without damaging bumper or coach. Feel sort of dumb asking Question but would be rather be safe than sorry with $ involved.  by the way all suspension aired up.   Bob

Finally got thru to Prevost they said as long as I pushed even on front bumper rubbers should be no problem. Any personal experience to the contrary would be appreciated. Will not be doing till this week end. Bob

Just a thought...

In this case can't get behind it and no good anchor point. Have winch truck but no real good place to drive axle I trust: It's on a slight grade and sure don't want it to take off.Putting it in shop to install motor and finish up brakes and interior. Will prob use both but don't trust anchor point so will have tractor on front just in case. Guess if I was not so tight I would just call the hook and say come and do it. Still might do that. Would prob be smart thing to do!

I knew you couldn't help it Scott. Fired Mader up the 98 sitin in front of the door lined up ready to go in. You see this dumb old man built his shop on a hill so if he got mad at a piece of junk he just give it a shove and all was gone out of site. But it does present challenges once in  a while. The shop ain't fancy part of the floors are rock.

Tow hooks on the front? Run a chain through pipe, run end of chain through tow hook and hook it back on itself. Do same at other end with tow/push vehicle. Now the push vehicle will push the pipe against the chain, not against the bumper. Put a heavy safety rope/chain along side in case the chain/pipe comes unhooked and Bus rolls away.

Bob,
How 'bout this; air up the tanks for brakes, use twenty of your closest friends to push it. Good luck!

Dennis the beverage bill would be more than the wrecker bill. ::) Boys coming this week end  just in case for back up and a little fellowship.(good excuse) will just use gradeall and push her in .Would do myself but if I scratched her up at this stage all I would hear is :You just couldn't wait. Good excuse to go Morell hunting..  All is good in bus land   . Was just trying to avoid a bad experience by breaking a front bumper or pushing it into a front breast plate.Actually didn't know how strong they were.  Bob

I can show you how the service tech put diesel fuel in the hydraulic tank for the rams on my Grad-all as I am yelling for him to stop but didn't get there in time?

Bob. if you are pushing with your tractor, I would put a piece of wood between rubber bump stops and the bucket. When I pushed mine with my machine, the cutting edge went through the rubber to the bumper. Just my two cents.

Have BK come and help. We know how well his bus stears his tow truck. Then have Don Fairchild pull you both out of the ditch. That was funny.  I wish I could of seen the look on BK's face LOL

I think you may have misunderstood what I was trying to say. You take a section of heavy pipe, like 3 inch perhaps, and run a heavy chain through it so it comes out the other end. You loop the chain hook through your tow hook, and hook the chain hook to the chain, then slide the pipe up agianst the chain hood, and pull the chain taut at the other end of the pipe.

Now you have a push/pull pole directly connected to your Bus. Now you loop the chain sticking out of the pipe through a hook on your push vehicle and do the same thing, pull the vehicle up tight against the pipe, and fasten the chain so there is no slack. You may need to shorten the chain, or you could connect the chain ends together, possibly using and additional chain, etc..

Basically, you have a tube (the pipe) with a chain through it, and attachment points at each end. If you push the pipe, you push the Bus, if you stop or slow, the chain checks you.

Thanks for info I had thought about that but only had about 60ft of rock in front of shop: and 16 inches of rain in last 2 weeks. Not enough turning radius either.Actually got back close and chocked it good and drag front around to line up to go straight in(also had Winch truck on rear) when boys came by we winched her in part of the way; blocked again so we could get truck out other bay(no rear door)and last put a 8by 8 on the gradeall and pushed square on front with a little up lift into place(had a safety chain).Reason we winched in part of the way was so we could get in front of the bus with the gradeall ;hasn't rained for 4 days here but still can't cut grass.  Thanks to all for the Ideas and support.  Bob
