Just wondering what major company makes the oil sold by stewart stev, as 15 40 detroit diesel???
-
Mobil Delvac is the manufacture of all oil sold by Detroit in their jugs has been since the beginning the Mobil 1300 is 15/40 and the new oil with no ash is the MX 15/40 good stuff.
The Delvac 1240 was for the 2 strokes the 1340 had 1.1 ash but it only has .05 now
-
I sell Exxon/Mobil products for a living so my recommendation is obvious. Mobil is the factory fill oil for Detroits.
-
Rotella by Shell makes the straight 40wt. I use in my 8V71 DD
-
Thanks... The prevost 60 uses the Detroit oil and I was told not to change... My 6v92 I only use Rotella 40...
-
Why are they telling you not to change the brand of oil? The Series 60 just uses 15W40 and it isn't as picky as the two strokes.
-
about straight weight oil, if any one else is looking for 40 weight low ash oil for DD 2 stroke, in las vegas you can find it at the 76/conoco/phillips warehouse "rebel oil" @ Sahara Ave. & I15, or ww williams in NLV. I have not been able to locate any chevron delo 40 weight in LV without ordering it, lvmci...
-
Tom check Car Quest in LV, Boulder City Auto parts also carries the Delo straight 40wt on the shelf ;)

This comes up every so often.
Here's my input. I know there are die hards that disagree. I probably have put more miles on my outfit than most. All of it towing a big trailer. Most of it up and down the Alcan and the Cassiar.
I use Chevron if available. My only real concern is that it states on the container "formulated for detroit engines" and that it is 40 wt. I will use a gallon of 30wt if needed during cold weather.
My engine has been on an oil analysis program since it was installed as a new Reliabilt remanufactured engine. The analysis shows the oil is OK with no adverse trends.
I am more concerned with what the container says the oil is for. If it says heavy equipment and farm equipment but does not state over the road trucks, I look for one that does.
Any distributor could order it for you.
-
Chevron 100 (40 weight cause it's hot here in Texas in summer) in my 8v92. Any oil distributor has or can get it. I buy mine in bulk and keep extra oil tank full above motor for top offs if needed. My bus only has 50 some odd thousand miles so it doesn't use a drop of oil. They tell me it will or leak it. So far you can still see the silver paint on motor and no oil leaks.
-
Delo 100 seems to be the choice of oil on this board me I prefer the Mobil Delvac anyway I can avoid the Delo 100 I do JMW I don't care for Delo 100 or the Shell Rotella in a 2 stroke
good luck
-
Isn't the ash level what everybody is concerned about and the Delo 100 the lowest?
-
The Delo 100 was originally developed for the 149 series in the 1960's for the heavy fuels used in those engines depending on the TBN lot's of time we had up the ash content to balance out the TBN depending on the fuel fwiw and now there is no heavy ash content in any C rated oil, I don't care what the web sites say I read the jug and Delo 400/40w works in the MTU 2 strokers .05 ash content
-
Thanks for the info. Will check it out. It a heck of a lot easier to find 400 that's for sure. I use it in all the rest of the equipment here at the place.
-
Mulldoonman, this ot but I have a BCM magazine with a advertizement and write up about Cole in Wy I give you if you don't have it heck it might even be your bus in the photo
-
What date was this issue. We haven't been any to find much out about them. They have been gone for awhile.

My understanding is the cabinet is still open I speak with his brother from time to time he had a conversion outfit here in AZ and the Magazine is from the 90's
-
Well I have said it time & time again!
When YODA speaks y'all should listen and learn!
We used to purchase Delo 40W or Exxon Xd3 40W (which ever our oil jobber had in stock @ the time we needed it, an if he had both we went with the cheapest!) by the barrel.
Upon reading one of Clifford's post about OIL here on the board I chose to do a little test myself.
I switched 1/2 the buses over to Mobil Delvac and left the other to on "what we had" and our oil consumption between oil changes dropped about 75%.
I now only use Mobil Delvac and buy it off the shelf at Wally World ! Or every now an then my local NAPA has it cheaper than Wally does!

Yeah, I lost all the docs down at Texas Custom Coach in Pipecreek Tx. when I was getting some goodies done the first of last year, and it had the original invoices in it. I knew there shop was still open for woodwork up north. Do you have or can I get a copy off the net? Thanks Cliff.

BK,
I assume that is Mobile Delvac 1240 you are referring to.
-
Walmart? Would love it if mine sold it
-
BK,
I assume that is Mobile Delvac 1240 you are referring to.
Lin,
FWIW I did the test on 2 strokes & Series 60s engines and it was Mobil Delvac 1240 sourced thru the oil jobber @ the time.
Also FWIW I am not running any 2 Strokes anymore and it's just plain Mobil Delvac 15/40 bought now days right off the shelf @ Wally World
Sorry for any confusion there guys!
;D BK ;D
-
But the fact remains the same with the Delvac we use less oil between changes on the 60 Series as well as we did on the 2 Strokes the test was done in 2009 when we had a pretty even mix of 2 Strokes & 4 Strokes in the 9 coaches we were running at the time! (thank god those are gone)
;D BK ;D
-
Yeah BK, Somebody told me years ago that those 2 strokes screamed like they did because they were always angry. Do they recommend a 15/40 mixture in these 8v92's or straight grade?
-
Probably straight grade 40
-
muldoonman for many years they specified straight 40W. But over the last few years they have said that 15/40 is fine for the 2 strokes.
I'm just old school an still use straight 40W in all 2 strokes.
;D BK ;D
-
Bk is right. Most of us stick to 40 wt becAuse we see less consumption. At least I do.
-
Folks, Thanks for the info. I will use what I got (delo100/40 wt.) cause i bought enough to change several times.
-
Thanks... The prevost 60 uses the Detroit oil and I was told not to change... My 6v92 I only use Rotella 40...
Did they explain why to only use Detroit Diesel oil in the Series 60? I've always used whatever bulk oil the local bus garage puts in and I don't burn any oil in my Series 60. I've never asked what oil they are putting in.
-
Some people just follow the manufactures recommendations and DD recommends the Delvac so does Volvo some like you really don't care what brand it is as long as it C-4 oil
I try and buy one brand and stick with it myself not that any other brands would hurt the engine just a personal preference for some
good luck

Follow this link to a previous discussion on this board about oil.
I believe it is one of the most intelligent and informing thread we've discussed.
I think it contains 6 pages.
It is a very good discussion by folks that know!
