Title: Steering tag axle lock
Post by: wayne on October 13, 2012, 09:37:36 PM
I have rebuilt all of the suspension and reassembled it but I have not yet finished the tag. It is a steering tag on a 1990 Setra 215 . I am not crazy about the way Setra locked the axle and wonder if one of the other manufacturers uses a better method. Not to mention the cost of lock cylinders from Setra are $800 each and I will need 2 of them. Does anyone have any experience with these? I have pictures of my tag without the locks installed on my website www.mybusgarage.com (http://www.mybusgarage.com) on page 2 of the pics. It seem like there has to be a better way.

Hopefully BK will chime in.  He runs mostly Setras in his charter service. If he hasn't pm me in a day or so and I will set up a phone tag.

Nice work Wayne very nice we are going to make you a honorary member of the Eagles lol

I have friend that owns Arrow Stage Lines he runs a bunch of Setra's I have seen those tags being worked on in the shop I'll ask next week for you if there is another way but him being a charter co he probably sticks to the factory setup for liability reason I'll ask anyway again nice work

good luck

Wayne the only alternative that I know of is the way Setra told us to do to "eliminate" the steering option on the tag. We did it on our first one and would not do it again.

If you find an alternate solution let me know as it gets expensive replacing those $800 cylinders as rebuilding them does not work 90% of the time! Setra told us that in the beginning stubborn we tried it twice before learning to agree with them. As a matter of fact I believe they kit stocking or selling the parts to rebuild them so to all the headaches it caused them, when they didn't work and customers wanted refunds!(not us of course, but I heard some did)
Looking good there keep it up, you'll have a superb coach when done.

Also I'd take Clifford up on that "Honorary Eagle membership" as your bus is an Eagle's refined cousin. (both designed and originally built by Kassboro)

(and you might even sell some of your front end kits to some Eagle owners as the 200 series Setra is supposed to have the exact same front end radius as an Eagle!)

Thanks Guys
I don't want to eliminate the steering so I will try to figure out a better locking method, so far I've done away with a lot of silly things and hopefully this will be the last of it.

I am excited to be a Eagles Member, when do I get the ID card and leather jacket?
