Title: how to tell a 6v71t from a 6v92t?

is there an easy way?

valve covers?

Look at the camshaft pulley it will have the model embossed like 6v71 or 6v92 more important make sure it is a silver engine model not the early green model 

The silver 6v92 engine starts at serial number F83425 anything below that don't buy it

Two other ways-92 series has 92 cast into the block on the front top next to the head (can't remember if it is the right or left). Also, if you remove the valve cover, 71 series exhaust valves are arranged in a square arrangement. 92 series has the bottom valves wider then the top. Good luck, TomC
