Title: 6v92 hot rod
Post by: sledhead on May 07, 2013, 04:26:23 PM
Just got back home from a trip to tune up my 6v92ta Wow! I had my eng. rebuilt (out of frame ) in march of 2010 .Reinstalled and drove it for 3 years then I called the shop 3 weeks ago to see if I could up grade the power. Come on down and we can up it to the 350 hp it was built to ( org, at rebuild was 300 hp as at the time dd would not go over the 300 hp on my ddec 2? ) I can't believe it was all done on the ddec with a lap top . As my son and I left the shop we were hoping for some more power.again Wow! on the way down to the shop 600 mile trip on the hills i would down shift from 4th to 3rd maybe 75 to 90 times as this was what i was use to , we did the math when we got there 7.5 mpg (canadian gal.) Not bad . Again Wow! the first thing i noticed was the throaty sound of the exhaust and the extra power. On the way back home only had to down shift 4 times and it drove great , got home filled it up and did the math ... 9.5 mpg and it ran cooler! Now i was going to replace it with a rebuilt 8v92 ta and add a 754cr trans. Not now, the power and drive is so much better it is relaxing to drive, not having to look so far ahead on a down hill to judge the distance to gain enough speed for the up hill climb. All this for a $150 reprograming bill .again Wow!               dave

The previous owner of our bus removed all of the DDEC stuff. He said because in Mexico, if it went haywire 12-18 hours away from the nearest shop with the proper computer equipment, he would be skunked. How dependable is DDEC in your opinion? Can you bypassed it in an emergency? My engine still has a whole bunch of unconnected electronic sensors all over the place.

Thanks in advance!

Sounds real good, Why not have it setup alot more, you could get the fuel mileage up to 11-12 mpg and cooler engine too.  I love it.

What size injectors do you have?

Mine (6V92TA, mechanical) now has 9G90s tuned at 1.46", and (on paper), puts out 350 HP and 1050 ft/lbs of torque. Sure feels good going up the hills passing most trucks, being able to keep up to traffic, and passing a slow vehicle when necessary. My bus weighs 27000 lbs. Gets about 8.5 m/Cnd gal.

What I am saying is that it can be done with a mechanical engine, just the fuel mileage isn't quite as good as with an electronic engine.

On the 1st try we went for a drive around the block and had a little black smoke . The program change adjusts the timing, adds more hp. On the 3rd set up is where the big change came . They wouldn't tell me how much hp was added but we started at 350 hp so as far as i can tell it must be close to 400 hp and with the help of my propane injection at 12 to 15 % incease and i only have it set at 2 to 3 lbs. As soon as i flip the switch on the propane the boost gage goes up to 26-27 lbs . i think the extra mpg is also the help of the propane, but now i don't use the propane as much as before. Now its time to experiment with the propane a little more.

As for the ddec i have never had a problem as of yet so i'm a believer.
