Do you all buy your oil filters (spin on) from local parts houses like NAPA or do they have to come from someone like Luke or a truck parts outfit. Just wondering if I should waste my time looking locally and endure the blank, dumbfounded looks when I ask for a filter for a DD 8V71.

I found that if I had the actual filter number that if the local NAPA house did not have it, they would order it for me.

Ross, I would copy the brand name and number of the filter thats on the bus now, and you can cross reference it yourself online or take the number to the local NAPA store and ask them to cross reference it there. As you pointed out, don't tell them the application.....I'd do the same for the fuel filters also. I keep spare oil and fuel filters in my bus, and I get them from NAPA. There should be NAPA stores all across the country. Hope this helps-

FWIW...both NAPA and CarQuest filters are made by Wix..a notably fine manufacturer of quality filters. I have no compunctions about using Wix filters on any engine. They're as good or better than Fram, Purolator or any of the junk you can buy in any of the aftermarket
Auto Parts stores.
I was Service Manager for a large Onan dealerl for 9 years in south FL and we used Wix filters excliusively and Valvoline Oil. For units that are required to start and go immediately to 1800 RPM (quite a chore when you think about it) we never had a failure as a result of the lube oil system. I understand that Cummins has bought Valvoline and add their additive to make Cummins Blue oil.
Baldwin is another fine old line filter. Pretty much the rest are premium priced filters and premium prices. When in doubt ask the NAPA or Carquest dealer for the Micron index for the filter you're buying. My guess is that it'll match or beat OEM filters.
