Bus is being worked on as you know and well to say the least, it's hot down here so we work with the a/c's on. Mostly one somethimes two, rarely three so far. The main one we use is in the center kitchen area and because of the amount of glass in the frontal area, we will sometimes use the front air. Ok here's the scenerio. Worked late in bus last nite and chose to sleep in it. It was nice and comfortable and chose to turn off the only a/c that was on, being the center one. After turning it off, it seemed like it wanted to turn itself back on but when I went to check it, it was off completely so off to bed I went. Am, got up, and turned it on as usuall and when compressor came on it went off after about 5 seconds. This was on low cool. Turned it completely off and waited 2-3 minutes and tried it again. Same thing! Turned on just the fan and it runs ok but has a bad smell. This doesn't look good does it? Anyway, did my search in my manual and nothing in troubleshooting suggest anything of the such so I called the mfgr. which is rv products. Tech guy said it's probably something in the printed circuit board. Does this sound normal or could it just be a bad compressor or bad start capacitor? I know it's hard to diagnose this from so far away but I figured I would ask! I might mention that while we were working on the inside the a/c filters were NOT on the units for aperiod of time. Could this have caused something like this to happen?
Since then I found a local company that does house calls for 42.50 including the first half hour. It also could be that this unit is under warranty IF it's not the filter deal and I would need the local company to file for that as well, per the mfgr.. Anyway he's coming out Monday 2pm to check things out!

Doesn't sound good. As to the filters, probably not the problem if you are getting air flow (but still-shame on you!). Just as a matter of simplicity and for least trouble, if you can't simply get it fixed, get another new unit. It is sometimes not worth the headache and repeat of the problem. Good Luck, TomC

The warranty on the bus AC rough in wirng has expired. LOL Sounds like it could be a board since it tried to start after you shut it off. Jack

Yea I didn't think the filters would cause this big of a problem but I had to ask anyway. They have been in and are still in at this time. It's the smell that really worries me!
Jack, LOL I wasn't insinuating anything like that! In fact, I revoved all of what you did and did it over myself so if it was an electrical issue, which I don't believe it is, it would be all on me! :)

Does that smell have a burnt scent to it? Sounds like you may let the smoke out of something, and you know what happens when the smoke gets out. Hopefully it was the smoke escaping from the start capacitor or something that is not too expensive. Jack

Here at the campground I get calls to fix the roof A/C in the rental campers all the time.
The majority of the time the cause is a lack of filters.
Instead of cleaning the filter in the sink, the renters just throw them away.
It takes a good half hour t an hour to clean all the crap that has built up in the blower and other parts.
Filters aren't there to make you happy, they are there to do a job.
If you remove them you can pretty much kiss your A/C goodbye.
Now that's just my opinion, but, we all know that opinions are like bu**holes..... everyone has one.

Jack, yea it's a nasty burnt smell so maybe I'll get lucky and just have to replace th start capacitor!
Dallas... I already admitted publicly to this stupid act I did so I don't need any help in making a bigger arse of what I did! :) :) Catch my drift and I don't mean what I smell fcrom the A/c either! It's no wonder Cat puts dings in your noggin! I can see clearly now why she does!

From what you tell us, to me it sounds like the noise you herd that night, was the capacitor melting down. Most likely a loose wire terminal
and it melted into the housing! Then you tried to start it up in the morning, the compressor wouldn't stay running without the capacitor.
And then you smelled the burning smell that the capacitor left in the unit! It's just that I've had this same senario too many times!

If you think its the capacitor you could probably get a replacement at your local HD, Ace, etc..
There easy to test with a vom with a movement.
