Where can I get more of these ?
« on: December 10, 2015, 03:22:01 PM »
These are on my start batteries - Anyone know where I can get more?
There is no corrosion on these battery posts.

4 is what I need for the pair of 8D's I'm replacing the house batteries with.

Based on how the charging system works on this Newell, the house battery bank needs to match the start bank.

THANKS !

I have 2-31 batteries for starting, and 2-8D Lifeline AGM for deep cycle. I regularly tie them together to charge going down the road with no problems. Consider using 6V batteries instead of the monstrous 8D's. Good Luck, TomC

I have 4, 6Volts and 2 31's and can also tie them together to charge from alternator or inverter or the original bus converter.

Newell designed this system to use 8D's.
I've been real pleased with the results of everything else on this coach, so I'm returning the system back to as originally supplied by the factory.

According to the theory, if the bank of batteries is mismatched, the weak battery will pull down the strong & lead to less than optimum battery life. Not to mention the overcharging/ undercharging issues.
Besides, my experience with 8D's has been very good so far.
As for multiple 6volt batteries - keeping up with the corrosion on all those connections requires more time than I want to spend on that task.

To each their own, but loading the 8D's in this coach isn't a problem for me.

Kyle -

Did Newell design the system with all "starting" 8Ds, or are the "house" units deep cycle?

Tortoise has 31s for starts, and 8Ds for house, but haven't checked whether they're deep cycle or start type.  Next project. . .

I going back with the Deka 908D dual purpose 200AH maintenance free for the house system no more AGM for me.I am just going with 4 instead of 6 this time maybe that will help on the heat build up.I really considered going with 6-8 volt batteries for the ease of handling but hopefully this is the last time I need to handle the heavy suckers. Plus I got a buy on the 8D's from West Marine in Havasu and they sold me a warranty for 100 bucks making the warranty for 5 years  ;D they didn't ask what the batteries were for

My understanding is that all 4 were the same - that way, when merged,  the charger fed them equally & the inverter used them equally.

Yours may be different but most Newells I been around of that vintage had a isolator in the system to allow charging and to prevent the draw down of the starting batteries from the inverter and house usage. It worked like a check valve allowing only electrical flow in 1 direction.I copied 1 of their system to charge all the batteries including my leveling jacks and generator battery from the 50D

Kyle   we can get into HUGGY and see one of those diode bridges or what ever they are called in  "enginerese".

In telephoneese it allows electrons to floe in one direction but not in the other.

You may have to set your alternator a little high because of the voltage drop across the bridge.

Makes the headlights very bright.
