What is it and what does it do?

Hello Experts,

I have a 1976 MCI 5B bus with a Detroit 8V71.
In the rear Driver's side, radiator grill intake is an item that I need help with.
I attached a picture where it is but the picture doesn't show the scoop.
There is a small 6 inch metal scoop that allows air to flow from the engine compartment upward to the front of the radiator or from the the intake grill to the engine compartment.
What is it and what does it do?

This picture is mine. It is my bus and myself. Could you not have used a picture of your own bus??

I think you must be referring to the combustion air intake to the air filter.

The air intake on MC5s is there at the bottom on the driver's side radiator. It goes to the air filter, then to the blower and into the air box of the engine. I blocked mine off and moved it to a spot high on the side just below the roof. It sucks a lot less dust up there. Makes the air filter last longer. The air intake on my Country Coach is up on the roof: even better.

The vertical vent is attached to my air filter but the is a short horizontal scoop - 6 inches maybe - not attached to anything. Is that something different?
