Alternator Studs
« on: March 02, 2018, 07:08:03 AM »
I have a wiring system in place for 12V from the previous conversion. The main 6ga line from from the engine bay runs to a stud in the electric panel next to the driver (labeled 12V in several places). Along the way it taps into the Genny alternator / battery, the house batteries, and various relays and meters. The end of the line in the engine bay was taped off, but dead ends right to the alternator. I assume this is supposed to run "from" the extra alt studs. The voltmeter reads 12V and the main studs read 24V as it should.

Is this what these studs are used for? Accessories?

See recently hooked up picture, I'm questioning my choice.

I am assuming that one of those main studs is a ground and one is 24 volts unless you have a dual voltage alternator.  The 12 volts from a smaller stud is probably from the Y connection and is used to run relays to show the alternator is generating power.  Your taped off lead probably connected to a battery equalizer to supply 12 volt power to the bus.  Again assuming the start system is 24 volts. We really need more information about your system.

The main post WAS 24V and the other is ground hence the colors. That bottom connection is the wire I am referring to. I think the old alternator had some sort of 12V setup running from it. I was reading these are AC terminals. I don't know if that means current or accessory? I think I'll skip this connection until I find out more info from either this thread or another source.

Those connection are probably connect to the stator prior to the diode packs and as such are AC current and the frequency varies with engine RPM.

I have a Delco Remy 12volt 145 amp alternator with those 3 studs. Were, are, used to generate 110 volts, probably with an additional component.
