need a new toilet
« on: March 11, 2022, 10:10:38 AM »
My Thetford 28100 rv toilet (20 years old) has a crack in the plastic housing where the bell crank is for the gate.  Not worth fixing.

Is Thetford still a good toilet?  I'm looking at the Aqua magic.

They are easily available from most anywhere online.

That's what we have - simple and lets the load drop directly into the tank. Reliable for 4+ years so far.

I just bought the Dometic model. It has the porcelain bowl and the little holes around the rim that swishes off the sides of the bowl. Can't say how well it works, as we haven't used it yet! I think it was around $250.

Two owners ago was a gadget guy. He put in a Microflush (out of California). It is air operated. Trap door makes a little motor sound and it flushes very convincingly, then the door closes with a motor sound. Works great but uses mucho water. Probably would not have bought one if I saw it at a toilette show (do they have those?).
But it works great and is tall. Rita and I are both six feet and getting older. Taller is better. Don't know how spendy it is and it takes some wiring vice just plumbing. (This sounds like every other sentence I like it but would not get one?) We sat on a few RV toilettes at camping world in case this one "craps out"(sorry, couldn't help it) but they all seemed shorter than we want.
Hope that gives you another option you didn't know about. I had not seen anything like it.

I narrowed it down to the Thetford Style plus #34429 and the Thetford Style II #42058.

After watching some guys on Youtube repair both, the Style II looks easier to dismantle and replace parts.  It seems to be the most popular and can be bought just about anywhere.

Personally, I'll  only buy a high porcelin model and elongated unless length is an issue. Those plastic ones are like headlights. Eventually they'll discolor in places and plastic will hold odors over time. I would buy a popular brand and maybe get a rebuild kit for the mechanism to have handy when the need arises. Unless kit is very pricey.

Rv toilets are all over the map in prices and quality, porcelain is the way to go just be sure the bottom seal can be replaced easy ,some you need to buy the complete mechanism for $250.00 .My son broke his Headhunter electric flush toilet that toilet cost him over $2000.00 for a replacement, replacement for mine if I need to replace will cost me $800.00 from Thetford

Seals for Dometic 320 loos are only a few dollars each off eBay, and can be replaced without tools in a minute.  I keep two spare seals, but so far haven't needed them.

The Dometic 320's supplied seat and lid are flimsy plastic, so I replaced them with a Bemis Weston slow-close oval seat that's much better.   I just had to move the new seat's rubber bumpers slightly further outboard to better line up with the Dometic's bowl lip.

Ted -

I have the same Microphor Microflush in my Prevost, except mine is electric, no air required. Microphor has now moved from CA to either NC or SC, primarily to escape CA's anti-business regulations and tax policies. Mullaney Associates is their distributor, if you need help/parts, call Anna-Marie at 856-956-1299 - she knows her stuff!

My MCI had an RV toilet with a "short" bowl, compared to a household unit with an elongated bowl. Not an issue for the wimminfolk, but very uncomfortable for us guy's "junk" when having to be seated. Lots of squiggling around to make sure you didn't pee on your socks as it shot out between the top of the bowl and the bottom of the seat!

Thus the recommendation: Go to an RV supply house and check out the two models you're interested in in person to see and make sure you're getting one with an elongated bowl! Your junk will thank you for it!

The Microphor air flush was design for when the toilet was not a direct drop to the tank,I had electric flush Microphor in my Eagle

I have the Sealand in both bus and truck. Neither are over the tanks. My bus has a 3ft run and my truck has more like an 6ft run to the tank. They both work just fine. How do you think your toilet in your house works flowing all the way to the street? Good Luck, TomC

I have a headhunter hydro vac and it is awesome never any problems and it is 22 years old . It uses 3 liters per flush but blasts a water jet at anything that goes down the hole so you can install it a long way from the tank . but it is not cheap . many many $$$$$$

I hear you RJ. Will look harder at it tomorrow but owners manual says air flush. The door that opens and closes is electric but I will look for an air line. It sounds like an air compressor goes off when you flush it.
It flushes like....well, lets just say Rita and I flush after we are not sitting on it and there is nothing quiet about it in the middle of the night.
I think there has to be air. I'll look.
It does work great but fills with mucho water.
I will jot down the name and phone number you sent. I'd hate to have to change it out. Parts are a good thing....
