Radius Rod Assembly
« on: July 07, 2024, 01:07:09 PM »
Why does the radius rod assembly have to nuts where it attaches to the anchor pin?

Also, there is a bent piece of metal ( I assume to keep the nut from rotating?) behind the nuts. Is this for some adjustment/alignment?

As mentioned in a previous thread, I'm having some rust cut out and some welding/repair inside of the spare tire compartment.

A better understanding of what this is for is helpful. Additionally, the anchor pin is obsolete. NFI gave me a price to manufacture it if I have to. However, the rust is bad enough that even if I got a pair of new ones, it wouldn't matter as the pillars they insert into need help first. Considering deleting this part.

Thoughts?

They help locate front axle. DO NOT ELIMINATE! Rust doesnt look that bad from here.

Just to clarify...

I'm not considering eliminating the arm.

Epretot's earlier post called "What is It" shows much worse rust seen inside the spare tire compartment as being the area of concern. My 2002 MCI has some rust there too, but mine doesn't look as bad. However, I think it would be a good idea to at least weld in some new steel to fortify the radius arm connection from the backside (inside the compartment).

Wonder how much rust he has at the rear of his MCI, rust can be bad at rear on the D's,back to his post he has to have some type clamping to hold the bar in place ,the bent metal where the nuts are ,about any thing could be made to replace it. The radius rod has to have a way to adjust it for castor and camber setting

Ok. That is what i was thinking.

The rear is great. The rust from the front is a result of the spare tire compartment collecting road debris and the spare tire hiding the problem.

Three separate welders agree that it can be driven safely. I'm taking it to Florida to have it repaired/re-engineered.

This is what two welders suggested. However, another suggested making a gussett to support the anchor pin.

The issue with this idea as I see it...it would make it difficult for future mechanical work to the pin or radius arm. Specifically because they may have to weld to the large washer.

The first stage should be to remove the assembly and Mechanically remove the rust then have a competant fab/welder do an Assessment.😉
