Rockwell Differential ID

Hello all,

I have a possibility of needing to replace my differential.

I am wanting to price some rebuilds, but sure of the type of differential. 

I called MCI and gave them the last 5 of VIN.  They say I have a Rockwell Carrier Differential with 4.56 ratio, and also gave me the serial number.  No model number though  

Is this all of the info I need to find the right one?  Also, if you have a suggestion of where to look, I could use that too.

Fowers are parting out a lot D's 1-800-872-5475 they will probably sell you a center,they are asking $2000.00 for the complete axle with brakes, don't get confused if they say we don't have any Rockwell only Meritor they are same

I have a complete rear axle from a 84 mci 9 . No idea if it would fit. I'm in ohio

Ok, that's all fine.  My issues at present is that I would like to know the model of the differential. 

Yes, If I could get under it right now I could look at the tag, but I can't, so I was hoping someone might know what model of Rockwell it is.

I don't have my D series manual anylonger but  call JD Bus repair or Luke I  think they all the same model for the D and DL with just different gear ratios my manual showed 3 different gear ratios for the same model,the number from the manual won't help they use MCI screwed up parts number ,I just called for the number

Hello Luvrbus,

Thanks, MCI could tell me the gear ratio and the Serial #, but not the model number.  Want to price rebuilds and decide where I'm getting one before I rear into it.

Will check with Luke.  Don't know JD Bus repair, but will look around.

Well, just to finalize this thread, before we left the farm, we jacked the rear wheels off the ground and stuck a scope in the filler hole. 

Then we turned a drive wheel very slowly while looking at the ring gear with the scope.  Didn't see any teeth missing and while turning the wheel, felt nothing less than complete smoothness. 

Did this in both directions and with 1 wheel chocked and without, so tried to see and feel everything we could.

All seems good, so we are hoping for the best and going with it.  Maybe those pieces that ce out when I changed the oil were from a previous third member and we're just not cleaned out when a new one was installed.

Still a bit of a mystery, but at least we looked at it and didn't see anything.

Sen, did you check the pinion gear? Or the pinion bearings? I've seen more pinion failures that ring gear failures.

We didn't.  They are covered with oil.  The pieces that came out, we think looked more like ring gear pieces. 

As I turned the wheel while looking at the gear, it felt smooth and heard no growling.

We hope it's ok
