Perkins fuel shut off (for generator)
« on: September 30, 2017, 04:46:50 AM »
Just as soon as I post that things are going well on our first out of state trip, the gadget they holds the fuel open on the Perkins running the generator craps out.

I'd call it a fuel solenoid, but it doesn't look like what I see online when searching for a new one.

Any Perkins gurus out there? It's the round but just behind the lever & bracket. When power (12v) is applied the lever rotates about 90 degrees ccw. This provides about an inch of travel for the horizontal shaft, which is connected to the fuel injector pump/governor.

I'm in Kansas City today, heading to Sioux Falls Monday. If possible, I'll change out while on the road, since we're planning to be away for another week.

Apologies for the rotated photo. Here's one in the correct orientation.

Perkins is owned by Cat now.  I would suggest contacting a Cat dealer.  Foley Equipment is the Cat dealer in that area and the Kansas City location is (816) 753-5300.  The parts department is open 8 am to Noon today.

Has the solenoid circuit blown a fuse when it shot craps. Its only a start but C power in liberty there has a couple places, they have quite a reach.  There maybe several others in KC,  I think one is a service facility.  Its been many many moons ago.

To keep it running in the meantime, you could wire the lever back to run, undo it to stop. I have a Perkins engine mounted to a Martin generator which was modified to use a different style solenoid from a Yanmar engine. You do not have use the same original setup if it costs too much, a generator shop could rig up something appropriate.

That type is called a actuator I never could come up with a source for it Woodward has one that is close but was $$$ so I ended up mounting a generic type generator solenoid setting the engine speed when it was running was a task to get right though since the one you have controls the engine speed also

Make sure the reset button isn't kicked.Ours would do that if we started it with electrical load on it before it got up to speed. If it's the solenoid, you can wire lever open, then unhook wire to shut down. Our button was on end of attached electric box, about 12x12x6. Red button about 1/2 inch in dia.

From the looks of what is hooked the that fuel control rod , that is not a solenoid.
It appears to be a speed control governor  AkA "Woodward or other manufacturer.
It constantly changes the fuel settings based on load to keep a constant speed, 1,800 rpm.
With the engine off it is setting in a full fuel condition, you cannot wire, hold , or lock it in any one position. FWIW.

Behind the lever, you see the coil return spring to return lever when generator is shut down.

Not sure if everyone saw my other thread yet, but I don't think I'll be fixing the generator. Someone crossed the center line yesterday and hit us head on.

Thanks for the info though, and if for some reason we end up keeping the bus after the insurance comp is done I'll be back to this topic.
