He wasn't at first Rick but after we talked he got nicer he did a little huffy about the offer till I explained it was a 1770 mile trip to buy a engine sight unseen just from his say so.
FWIW I ask what oil has been used in the engine and he said he would get back to me on that

good luck

It's painted right on the valve cover in huge letters 15/40 synthetic only.

I have pics at home do you want me to send them to you or post them? Let me know

Externally, this is the cleanest detroit I have ever seen BTW.

Is there something special about these heads and crank?

WOW! what a gorgeous bus. I wish I could afford it. I don't know if I would be pulling a motor out of that beauty.

Ahoy, BusFolk,

I grew up in Willmar MN.  Cold place!!!  The reason boyz from MN grow so tall is that they are trying to get their butt out of the cold snow!!!  Joined the Navy  --  Never looked back.

Shoot! Wish I could find it. Is it under the MCI listings? Don't see anything there... the 'bottom left' is seated buses. And only one MCI 8, which isn't black.

No big, really. Would just like to see it... fascinated by 'bus porn,' as you guys call it.

Just use it as is. My mechanic tells all kinds of stories about how you can run the DD worn out for forever. He even had a truck that he ran all over the country for a year with a bad cylinder. He convinced me that I wouldn't have a problem taking my wheezer bus, that requires ether to start even in 90 degree weather, on a 8k mile trip through the Rockies. He was right, no problems, and I wouldn't hesitate to go again many times over. I used a gallon of oil every thousand miles and I believe half of that is lost to leaks. Save your money and time for more important things.

Amen, Barn Owl -

I don't know squat about the finer points of engines and such, but coming from Quebec, I know lots of guys that run these things... right into the ground, some would say. This one guy - he runs raw logs 'up' - and finished timber 'down' (go figure?). Anyway, 250,000 miles after being told he needs a re-build, he's still going strong.

Smoke? Yup... until she heats up. Hard to start? Yup... but a squirt of ether cures that. Does it run? Like a whowlin' banshee. I know... I made a flip with him, from Quebec to Florida and back. Two stops each way (required, I guess?) and round trip in under 5 days.

Use some oil? Yup... two gallons down, two gallons up.  But like my bud, says, "Plus cheap qu'un autre moteur. Yeah, we use some 'Englishisms' - cheap is still cheap in any language.

BTW, his rig is a '98 with over 2 million miles (same engine).
