hi all, new to the forum. just looked at all the busses, wow, ya all got some nice rides. i am from Bothell,WA. my wife an i are semi retired. i have a one ton dually and am thinking about doing a TT to pull but since i have been looking in here to see what ya all are doing i kind of started looking at busses.
i have found one, a 1974 gmc 4905a, 40', dd8v71 an 4 sp w/wet clutch. the owner wants $13,000 for it. it has been somewhat converted and can be used. i have only saw a pic of it an it looks good. have not talked to him yet. will see.
am trying to get our house ready to sell so really can not do anything as yet. well anyways, just wanted to say hi to all. am reading alot here an am enjoying the forum. lot's of info and seems to have alot of good folks here to help the newbies out. thanks, i'll be around.

Outlaw,
Welcome to our wonderful world of nuts (Busnuts, that is).  It is difficult to say what that GM is wortth based on such a small amount of information and no photos, but in todays depressed market, that sounds a little high.  Jack

Welcome aboard, Outlaw. I hope you enjoy yourself.

We would love to see some pics of the bus that you are looking at. What kind of a price range are you looking at? Are you very mechanical? Do you like the older coaches, or might you go for something a bit newer? I agree with Jack, 13K sounds a bit high. If you want to spend more like 30 to 50K there are LOADS of great buses out there (already converted).

God bless,

John

welcome, lots of decisions.as far as value...does it have a generator? Does engine start and run good?will you be happy with the trans set up?do you like the lay out?looks? tires a major factor (most do not run more than 10 yr old tires) lots of seated coaches in the 80's for less money..do your own?lots of info here and just ask questions...do it your way..

1974 GMC 4905A Conversion Bus, 40ft

The 4905A has the largest belly storage of any bus ever made.

Detroit diesel 8v71
4 speed, wet clutch
Brakes excellent
Steering totally rebuilt

The drive system is in very good condition. I had two separate companies inspect the drive systems, all items (except for the backup lights and electric horn - air horn OK ) were either repaired or declared to be in very good condition. I just started it up after sitting for more than a month and it starts in less than a single revolution (this is a true Diesel, no glow plugs).

It is a true highway bus, not a fast bus, however it is a very economical bus. I only checked the milage once, on a trip from Eugene, Or. to Sacramento, Ca. (over the passes) at which time it got 9.2 mpg. Because it is a Detroit Diesel it does use oil, however I have been told by a mechanic I trust that this is normal for this engine. If you need to move a lot of stuff in addition to your crew, or you need a unit which can be off the grid for extended periods this is the best you will be able to find for under 50K. In October 2007 it was appraised for between 30K and 50K replacement value.

2KW Inverter, Dock charger
6.5KW Onan Generator
Solar panel on roof
Extremely large water (145 gal.) & propane (50 gal.) capacity
8cf Refrigerator, recently rebuilt
Large shower & bathroom
Leather couch and drivers seat

The interior is in good, but not pristine condition. Approximately 90% complete, fully usable as is, but it does need finishing, basic handyman work. We have removed the bed, it will hold a Queen or you could easily put in 6 bunks. It needs a thorough cleaning. There is some rust, the bus specialist assured me that there is no problem structurally. There is a crack on the door window, the passenger side window and the rear window, however all are sound. There is a 6 inch tear in one of the stainless lower panels next to one of the belly door handles, a few small dings on the lower panels (very minor) and a few rubber hinges could use replacement (parts are obtainable).

We will consider financing up to an ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM of 50% or partial trades (ABSOLUTE MAXIMUM of 50%) for precision machinist tools, CURRENT video/photo equipment, CURRENT Macintosh hardware, or an ECONOMY commuter motorcycle/scooter, etc.

desi, thanks for posting that. yeah, we would redo the interior. my wife used to be a interior decorater. as long as everything else is in. i don't want to have to do a complete conversion, thats why i like this bus. yep, the stick is ok, haven't double shifted for years but it's like riding a bike, ya never forget. thanks all.
