11r 24.5 tire prices again.
« on: May 31, 2010, 01:46:35 PM »

Time to think about tires. the old thread was quite a few years old.  Wondoring what new info is.

I have 11R 24.5's    Plan on moving steers to Tag and probably get new steers.   Might be interested in some Take-offs for drives if y'all  know of any.

This thread is kinda a revival

http://www.busconversions.com/bbs/index.php?topic=9842.0 but mostly wrong size

I checked a local truck salvage yard.  He had plenty 22.5 but 24.5 were slim pickings.

Has there been a shift in the use of 24.5?

I can get a couple of dayton ??? or dyna tec ??? for 322 mounted and balanced.

any Ideas?

Most over-the-road longhaul trucking operations these days are using 22.5s. The use of 24.5s is probably still good in a regional/local construction/dirt haul type operation, but those are not the tires you want..too beat-up. Why not look at pricing of some "Double Coin" brand? My suggestion is to stay away from the absolute cheapest new tire...remember the old adage 'you get what you pay for'? Good luck

I just had six tires installed that were take offs dated 08 I think if not they were 07. They are all Michelin XZX and had more than half the tread. I got them from a tire store that does the DOT tire inspections for school buses.  Mounted balanced new stems tax etc. the total was less than 1450 for all six.

They have to pull any mismatched tires that are on a dual set of drives and put new on according to the guy who helped me pick out the tires I wanted.

They had a pretty big stack of pretty decent tires.

I don't know if it is a state thing or national thing but it is a GOOD place to start looking.

YMMV

have purchased 2 new tires since October.  I went with Double Coin.  Both times they were not able to balance the first tire off of the shelf.  One I got at Luvs truck stop the other in Waco, Tx.  The one in Brookshire was $400. The one in Waco was $340.  Both of those prices were mounted and balanced.

I watched them as they balanced them.  I could see a slight wobble and told them I did not want that tire.  Both times the second one balanced out with very little weightand spun really smooth.  I have had nit trouble with them.

After purchasing the bus my funds dropped pretty low.  I intend to buy 2 new tires a year and move the steers to the rear as I purchase the new.

Kelly Springfield, Continental, Cooper, Firestone, Bridgestone, BFGoodrich, Goodyear, Michelin, Yokohama-all good tires with good names.  Hankook maybe a lesser known.  I would stay away from El Cheapo Chinese tires (except on the dualies).  Personally-I always like to have the best steering designed tire on the front axle.  As far as the drives or tags, that's where you could maybe save some money.

The most common truck tire now is the 275/80R-22.5 or 295/75R-22.5, depending on tire manufacturer.  Even the 11R-22.5 is getting less truck time.  And yes-since the 22.5 low profile tires have proven that they can perform and last as long as the 24.5, and with the advent of higher profile trailers that need lower tires, 24.5 tires are less popular then say 20 years ago. Good Luck, TomC

Jon, a friend is having an auction here in Franklin, NC on Saturday and I know he has a number of 22.5"steel wheels. How many do you want? Or do you want to come up and bid for yourself. You should have my number...give me a call or a PM.

I purchased 6 Kelly Armorsteel 11RX24.5 a couple weeks ago and they are made in the USA.  Stamped on the side of each tire.

I purchased these from Raben's they have a lot of tire places across the country.  Do a Google search for them.  I got these in Clarksville Indiana across the Ohio river from Louisville KY.  about $2300. for the 6 mounted , balanced and what ever.  Kelly is part of Goodyear Tire Company.

H,mm,   I found Toyo's here for about 410.00 mounted and balanced.

I would like to stick with 11R 24.5 if possible.   The RPM is lower,  How much would you'guys notice on this.

I think I have about 471 on the Bridgestones that are on there  now

Sort of laid back here on comment...recaps go for around 245 each...run on drives....most of the treads Gators you see on the road are new tires...had two new tires fail and the recaps on drive axle are just fine...fwiw Inspections for retreads Casings are very strick...Bob

Ok a little follow-up.

I got in touch with a neighbor that deals in used truck tires.  He was gathering a set that he inspects/repairs/ regroove but did not have a set in time so he referred me to a competitor who was closer to me.  He had a 4 tires that were bandag recaps that were inspected/repaired with date codes of around the end of 05/ beginning of 06 for $65 each with $25 to mount.

I also got a couple 08 steers from a fellow busnut that he wasn't gonna use for a while.  they are 11R22.5's, need to set ride height now.

Maybe not first choice but we made it to Hunting Island and back without issue and my bus sits more than goes.

My old drives were 99's,  tread was much but starting to get a crack.  my steers were 2000.   All bridgestone and came on the bus when I bought it.  only had some cracking in the outer side wall of one outer drive tire.  I no like.

I will put the old steers on the tags/spare and did take one as a spare.

This should hold me a couple of years and then I'll start pacing them through a couple at a time.

Just how I did it.

Would like to know where you get them. and are they 11R 24.5

That was about the price from my neighbor but they call a mobile tire change guy.   He did not have 4 of them.  The other guy had had virgin regroove for about $100 but not 4 11R24.5
