Roof sealant or coating
« on: August 08, 2010, 06:55:24 PM »
We are looking at coating our roof this week.

What have people used, and what works the best. We are thinking a brilliant white. We obviously don't want anything that will chalk up our bus.

I remember Anja (divinerrightstrip) had something from Home Depot that she used. I don't remember the product.

What other products are out there?

Ideas or suggestions?

Thanks.

God bless,

John

DO NOT USE kool roof or its kin(5 gal bucket, latexy stuff) from home cheapo streaks down the sides and mildews badly....very unsatisfactory ..I had to apply yearly as the rain and intense fl. sun broke it down.......there is a long thread on BNO last week under ceramic paint that will help you.
Sometimes the more I think about something the less I think about something.    As soon as I save a little money my bus finds out.                                      Why grab a plane when you can take the bus ?                         If I'm wrong 10% of the time how can the "Queen" be right 100%

I rolled on a Henry's product I bought at Lowes back in 04, no chaulking and I like it. It's an elastomeric white roof coating.

Clifford does have a great idea, but I didn't know him back then! ::)

For the portions of the roof which will not be covered by solar, deck, etc, I am considering a thick layer of reflective foil (possibly gold-tinted), doped directly to the coach roof and to the sides between windows and stainless lower half.

The one problem with this is that after I get the deck up there, the reflection from the roof might be annoying, requiring a shade between the deck and the back half of the coach.

Anyone used a product called Black Jack ultra 1000? It's available at Lowes, and claims heat reduction of 30% and stays flexible too.

Yeah! That was me, I used BlackJack.
It was just a basic white, Elastomeric paint. I was looking for Henry's, but couldn't find the stuff anywhere in Rhode Island.

So far, so good! I mean, it was easy to put on, has been resistant to the moldy filth that the tree above the bus likes to share... flexible, yes. Of course, "Urge" hasn't really GONE ANYWHERE yet, or moved around, but I walk on the top of my bus a bit and haven't damaged it or anything. :)

I used Kool Seal and have not had a problem yet, but things do not mildew much in the desert.  I had considered using the similar Henrys product, and it probably would have been about the same, but I called the company and they said that they do not recommend it for RV use.  Kool Seal, of course, markets it for RV's.  I'm sure that there are better products like the ceramic ones mentioned, but this works fine.

Sorry, it must have been Home Depot, because I found it on their site.

I'm pretty sure this is it.

Thanks for the replies folks. That gives us some good options.

Clifford, I don't have any particular thing in mind. Money isn't really an issue, so we really aren't looking for just cheap. I don't think that Jim's will work out, because I am not sure when we will be back through that area.....

We really don't want our walls chalked. Are you all saying that the Henry's and Kool seal chalks?

God bless,

John
