Shakedown problems Need trans help
« on: August 11, 2010, 02:13:26 PM »
I finally got to take my shake drove cruise on my 4106 and now I'm in trouble. Fist the small problem. How do you turn the heat off for the defrosters? The big problem when the bus warns up after driving a while I can't shift gears. I don't mean grinding, I can't get out of second.(Spicer 4 speed 8V71) I know this is poor planing but we are leaving tomorrow and I am looking for some quick advise.

It should just slip out of gear into neutral as you back off the throttle, with or without the clutch.   If it doesn't do that then I can't imagine what might be wrong, but it would make me very nervous too.  I would suspect a linkage problem.

The shifter hardly moves at all. With the bus off and a little cooler now I can shift int firs and second but not third and fourth. The oil is low.

Check the reverse solenoid have someone engage it while spraying PB or other brand on the linkage and you should be fine

The first thing to do is determine whether the problem is in the transmission or in the shift tower/linkage.  It is pretty easy to ,disconnect the linkage at the trans and determine the problem from there.  If the shift tower and linkage has not been greased or adjusted in a few years, it should be a pretty easy fix.

Grease shift tower. Not easy but essential. Next grease the bearings on the engine bulkhead. Another fun job without extensions on the grease fittings. And lastly grease the pivot points on the transmission cover.
If you have greased everything above then the shift linkage will move easily.
I had a problem with shifting on the Buffalo until I greased the shift tower. Viola! An immediate change for the better.

Good luck

I had my son shift into and out of reverse and you were right it was sticking.

PB to the rescue.

Len every thing has been greased but I didn't do any thing to the reverse solenoid
