Which thin-set tile mortar to use?
« on: January 30, 2011, 09:39:31 AM »
I'm looking at thin set tile mortar and there are about a dozen, which one works best in a bus!  My subfloor is 1/2" plywood/ 1/2" hardiebacker!  I have about 75 sf of space!  Ace I know you are out there and are flooring specialist......!  All other input is welcome!

I'm not Ace, but I build houses and have been doing my own tiling for years. In my bus I used (Laticrete) Sure Set "Gray" It is a one-step polymer fortified tile adhesive that eliminates back buttering to ensure maximum coverage on back of tile.
.Thin bed or medium bed applications
.Drop and go application method
.Exceeds both ANSI A118.4 and A118.11 shear bond specifications
.Contains Microban antimicrobial protection

I used this in my bus and have not had any problems yet. I live in Alaska and we go from one extreme to another, rain then freeze then back to rain. So far so good.
Maybe Ace will chime in and give his input.
Good luck

With anything that has a tendency to flex, I personally would use a product called "flex-bond". It is made for this purpose and using the hardi board us a plus.

I am at the same point as to selecting a mortar to use.  Last time I used Ge Silicon and had no problems over 5 yrs. In new project I want to use something less expensive. So am watching response to Mud's post. Will the flex bond work over plywood on floor also?   Thanks Bob

I'm not real familiar with Flex Bond, but I would think it would work on plywood. As long as it is AC or any other ply with exterior glue, also it should be at least 5/8" or thicker. The Sure Set I used in my bus will indeed glue to AC ply. My ply is 1-1/8" thick T&G.
But as Ace said, you probably want something that will hold up to flex. If I was to do it again I would use Flex Bond.

Yes to using it on plywood but remember, the thicker the floor, the better for flex.

Hey Gary no offense meant, I appreciate any and all suggestions.....LATICRETE  50 Lb. Multi-Purpose White Thin Set was what I was looking at, I'll read the sheets on your recommendation thanks!  Ace I'll read up on that "flex-bond" too....thanks!  The only thing i actually used different was the .020" stainless sheet over the rear wheels and engine area, up to and including the area above the batterys and fuel tank compartment!  Prevost did the same to protect the floor material from road and weather moisture! It is the bottom layer of my built up floor!  This sheet completely seals the back of the bus from wall to wall!
