50 wt. oil - good price
« on: September 23, 2011, 08:36:11 PM »
Thought I would pass on this info. Today I purchased 50 wt. motor oil from local distributor for $58.32 for a 5 gal. bucket. They used to carry citgo for a lot of years, but changed to national oil about a year or so ago. The distributor tells me its made by pennsoil. Yes it is cf-2. May want to check your local distributor. I called o'Reilly's and thet wanted $90.00 for same amount.  Hope this helps someone.  Ron 4104

I would only run straight weight 50wt oil in a 2 stroke if the outside temperature was continuously above 100 degrees.  Or at least if you have a block heater.  Way to thick for anything much below 60 degrees.  The only Detroit 2 stroke engine I know of that was approved for 50wt oil was the big 149 series-and then in mining trucks.  Good Luck, TomC

I read an article not long ago about 50 wt and tired old DD engines.  The author said the 50 would help in the tired old slobbering engines for a while but was not a great or permanent fix.  Had I had some 50 wt this last summer I would have used it.  Hottest on record in Texas, very brutal summer this time.  I did a lot of traveling in 105 to 109 temps.  I probably would have used the 50.

My DD mechanic/consultant ran 50wt year-round in his DD powered trucks when he had them and swears by it. I bought 50wt and use it because I got a 55 drum of it for $250. After two years of running it I will agree with my mechanic, no problems, no matter what the temperature is. I like it, my bus likes it, and I will continue to use it.
