First good run with my series 50 swap

Did a little run with my new series 50 B400 swap.  Went from Vancouver BC to Osoyoos BC . about 250 miles north  through the mountains.( Little golf trip with the boys)  Sorry Clifford but it is a 100% better than  the 6V92 I took out.  The 1150 lbs ft of torque was nice. The hills I was climbing before at 30mph, I was doing 45 with the series 50.  It is a way quieter, you could hardly hear it running compared to the 6V92. Milage was about 1 mile a gallon better, I was hoping it would be more, and the best thing of all was no oil consumption and the back of the bus was clean.Lol. Man what a difference going from the neck jerking 740 to the B400. awesome!  Going to do a longer trip this week and hoping the fuel milage improves as I learn to keep my foot out of it.    Cheers Gerry.

Great it should get you better than 2 mpg fwiw I am not a fan of the 6v92 never have been and never will be lol it should serve you well since you know how to rebuild the balance shafts that's the part I don't like about a series 50 the least bit of wear and they shake the bed sheets of the bed

Ya Clifford it shifted into 5th at 55mph . I don,t think that old gal has ever seen 85 before. Lol  Pretty scary at that speed .   Cheers Gerry

Gerry Sounds like a great combo, I met a guy from Merritt that had a102A-3 also with a series 50 . I think it a 740 tranney. If your ever in Vernon drop by.

It doesn't seem fair to compare the two engines if the 6V92 was worn out.  Was it a 6V92TA with 350HP and 1050 foot pounds of torque?  That is what I have and it is smooth, quiet, and doesn't use much oil in it's 60,000 miles or so.  Seven to eight mpg depending on speed and tow car.  All the Series 50 and 60 I have heard are very noisy if you are standing outside the engine compartment, unlike the 92 series.  Did you have a blown muffler with the old engine too?
Your story does not match my experiences, but I'm glad you are happy-- thats what counts.

yea bet it doesn't idle as smooth as the old 6v92 two stroke  the ones I have been around are shakers on idle 50 or 60 series

That is the sad nature of a 4 cylinder engine. No matter how much power they can put out, they are still not going to be as smooth as a 6 or V8 and especially an old 71 or 92 series. I do hope you like your new engine and you ought to be proud of what you did.

The 6V92 had about 80,000 miles on it. 320 hp recently tuned.  Ya the series 50 rattles a bit at idle but how often are we doing that.  I can tell you that when traveling it is a way quieter in the bedroom than the 92 was.  coupled with the B400 with fifth gear it cruises at 1400rpm at 60 mph compared to the 92 /740 at 1850 rpm.  that's probably the nicest part. If I tried to run the 92 at that speed it would overheat.They don't like lugging.  Don't get me wrong , 71's and 92's were my life, 40 yrs of building and repairing them. I was hesitant in doing the swap, but it was to good of a deal to pass up.  Cheers  Gerry
