Oil????
« on: July 04, 2012, 07:51:39 AM »
No pun intended or course when I say don't throw me under the bus for asking another oil question.  Here goes!  Last year i found a deal on straight 40 weight oil that is within specs of Detroits recommended ash content.  An oil distributor was closing shop and dropped the price to about $1.00 a gallon.  So me and a friend bought every can they had.  I should be good to go for many years so far as bus oil goes.

The question is what would it hurt to run that straight 40 weight in my Kubota generator?  I am already running it in my 7.3 power stoke in my Excursion.  Will it hurt the Kubota deisel engine?  We rarely see below 40 degrees in my part of Texas.  Sometimes it gets down into the teens but it would be rare for me to be driving the bus in teen weather.

Post up please as I am either headed to Walmart to get oil or  am going to run the 40 wt.

In your heat, I'd happily use the 40wt too.

It is the other part of 15W40, after all....

For the crowd, when the temps get down into the teens, the generator will turn more slowly when trying to start...

but wal knows that, and has lots of available battery to just crank a little longer, and a can of love spray if starting is a critical event.

happy coaching!

Correction!  I checked and it was $2 a gallon.  I got the oil and filters changed.  I am gearing up in advance as the first Saturday in August we will be on the road for 4 weeks straight training dogs.  I am looking forward to the trips every weekend but not looking forward to training dogs in this heat.  Last year we were training in 109 degrees in Fort Worth.  That is too hot for a one eyed fat man ;D

I'd be happy with the 40W in the generator, but I would be leery of it in the 7.3.  That thing has, I do believe, a high pressure oil pump that supplies oil at up to 3,000 psi to power the injectors.  40W cold may not flow well enough to let it have the volume it needs, and even then the thick oil may have pressure issues.  In warm temps like now, not so bad, but in cold temps it could hurt that HPOP or blow the O-rings on the injectors.  In my 6.0, I run 5W40 when the temps start to get down in the low 40's at night, to suit it's HPOP (different design, but same sorta idea).  This is just off the top of my head, I don't really know much about the 7.3.  I do know that in the 6.0 PSD straight 40 weight would not be a very pretty sight if the weather got cold all of a sudden...

Correct me if I am wrong but doesn't the hpop deliver 3000 psi to the injectors?  Or better yet, it isn't the motor oil that is at 3000 psi but the fuel being pushed through the injectors?  I am not sure.

No Wayne, Brian is right and so are you the HPOP has it's own oil sump on the 7.3 I am probably wrong also but I never heard of 3000 I always thought it 500 to 1000 # on the 7.3 the 6.0 I have no idea I run from those

I do know the Hpop is one high $ little oil pump from Ford or IH

good luck

Clifford i surely don't need to find out how much that hpop goes for now days.  My truck is in the transmission shop right now getting a new front seal put in it.  Fortunately my momma raised no fool.  It started dunping trans fluid really really bad.  It was 105 degrees that day. I was in Seguin, Texas visiting a friend when it happened.  So I waited until dark and the temp coooled down to 90 degrees.  I filled it up with fluid and we lit out for home.  It didn't leak near as bad and we made it.

My mechanic told me I needed a new transmission at a cost of $5000.  I got on the ford truck forum and within minutes had the front seal pegged as the problem.  I got a new mechanic to say the least.  He is servicing the transmission with new oil and filter, pump gasket, front seal and servicing the differential for the 4 wd part of the transmission.  $590 bones.  He works on Allisons as well.  Like I said I got a new mechanic.  The other guy can bite my hiney.  Even after I told him what I found on the forum he tried to talk me out of just replacing the seal.  My truck only has a 126,000 miles on it.

Clifford,

It was my birthday on the 23rd on June any chance your feeling philanthropic with one of those barrels? Just kidding, I get 2 gallon jugs at Fleet Farm and they're pretty reasonably priced.

Off topic to be sure, but here goes - the 7.3 PSD is known for being a workhorse and strong.  The HPOP has a reservoir that is replenished by engine oil from the sump as it sends oil at between 400 psi (minimum pressure to start the engine) and 3000 psi (full throttle) to the injectors.  The injectors are electronically controlled as far as opening and closing is concerned, and they use the pressure from the oil to energize the injection stroke.  Inside the injector is a pressure multiplier that has a 7:1 ratio, so the maximum pressure that the fuel sees is 7 times what the HPOP pressure happens to be at the time (it varies constantly, controlled by the computer and the IPR - injection pressure regulator).  The injectors have three sections, all separated by O-rings.  At the top is the electronic part, with the solenoids, in the middle is the oil part with the high pressure oil, and at the bottom is the fuel part, fed with low pressure fuel from the fuel pump, and injected into the engine.

After learning about modern diesels in a hurry (I just bought one, and two weeks into it, it had a low fuel pressure issue that ended up costing the dealer around $5K) I just about wanted to kiss my MUI Detroit on the governor!

Walt , what brand of oil did you buy? I buy my delo 100 on the east side of Austin. They sell in bulk just put in 5 gallon buckets. It's about 70 miles from me but nobody carries it around here.
