What is going on with diesel prices?
« on: October 06, 2012, 06:24:21 PM »
I ran a few errands today and about had a heart attack when I saw the diesel price at the station I normally use.  The price had jumped from $4.09 to $4.50 in two days!  I'm in Minnesota, not California.  Interestingly enough, the two gas stations down the street still had diesel at $4.09.  Gasoline prices are slowly going down and are now around $3.75.

I checked Gas Buddy and diesel locally ranges from $3.89 to $4.50.  There are a lot of stations listed at over $4.40 so the $4.50 price I saw is not a fluke.  I understand that diesel prices are more in the winter, but they don't generally go up by 40 cents overnight.  Oil prices and whole fuel oil prices are actually going down right now so no idea why the refined product is soaring in price.

Getting crazy here in SW Oregon also.  How high will fuel prices have to get before we really start to cut down on fuel expenses?  Dunno.  HB of CJ

Its sure not the price of oil,, three refineries are down presently, and with none allowed to be built since the mid 70s
effects the price of refined products quicker than the price of oil.>>>Dan

People are speculating on what the price will be and then it goes up or down. Here in cali they say it is because of the fire at Richmond oil refineries, chevron 1 week, shell the next. Almost like it happened on purpose?
Ours in Roseville is 389.00 with 30 cents off from where we buy our groceries Safeway. regular price last week was 4.19 to 4.56. I calabasas CA it was 5.31 don't know why that was.
Diesel same thing.

Gasoline consumption is already down in the USA and is predicted to be down by at least 20% in a few years as prices stay high and people buy higher MPG cars.  Refineries are shipping refined fuel overseas to keep prices high.

Diesel prices here in Minnesota don't typically jump so much overnight unless oil prices are going crazy or gasoline prices are jumping too.

Hi All, I predict there will be another fire, a refinery mishap, a power failure or some such excuse for a price hike, I love the multiple plant shutdowns for cleaning excuse,  just before the election, lvmci...

Well, actually the election has a lot to do with it. When Bush was running his buddies lowered the price just before election and now Obama is getting the opposite treatment.

There is no other possible explanation for the rise.

CA has even managed to create a fake shortage as a smokescreen. Same thing happened in '74 while I was there and the east coast hadn't even heard or a shortage!

I am putting a pipeline through the new www.bakkenoilexpress.com facility, and watch them load out and ship two to three trains a day, that is 104 tank cars per train averageing 70,000 gallens per tank car, it all adds up to more oil out of one facility than they are reporting for the entire state of ND, wheres it all going ? this facility still under construction, it can only hold 650 tank cars at one time, when done they are saying a 1,000 to 1,200 cars.

This Global Economy BS is killing us. Have a friend who works for Exxon/Mobil Refinery (Baytown Tx.) and there ARE shipping refined fuel out of country and that is why fuel is so expensive in the states. The more they drill (there's a drilling rig across my cow pasture) the more they will sell abroad. These stock market speculators are killing us also. Normally buy red fuel but ran out yesterday and bought diesel at pump in Bastrop Tx. for $3.81 a gallon here. Heading to shop/office in West Texas and it's always .20 to .30 a gallon higher there.

Here in California the gasoline prices are over $5.00 in some places because of "refinery shut downs and maintenance".  I just bought Diesel for my car yesterday and it was still at $4.35.  Nice to have a Diesel car that averages 23-25mpg (with 418,000 miles on it).  Good Luck, TomC

Right now, there are probably as many people on earth who don't own a car as do own a car.  Many of those who don't have a car want one pushing oil consumption ever higher worldwide.

Even if the USA could produce 100% of its own oil prices will remain high as oil companies will sell to the highest bidder.  Oil companies will ship oil overseas if they will pay more.  We could nationalize oil like some countries, but I don't see that happening.

No matter how much we drill the oil is always sold at market price duh. And China/India/Brazil appetites for oil are going vertical. There is no US policy that can change that. Drill baby drill ain't going to do squat too the price. The rate of demand increase is simply too great.

What we need is a game changer like this developed right here in the good old USA at Oak Ridge Nation Labs back in the 70s: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Liquid_fluoride_thorium_reactor.

Guess who has been to ORNL repeatedly in the last 10 years interested in that technology?  China of course. They are trying to copyright and patent LFTR design technology so they can sell it back to its creator, USA.

The US we went from zero to the moon in eight years so we should be able to commercialize the LFTR in what, five? That design is safe, has minimal waste issues and best of all, we have mountains of fuel for it right here at home.

Imagine every refinery having its own reactor to synthesize hydrocarbon fuels from CO2/H20. The middle east could go back to camels and tents, the world could zero out net C02 generation and we can have 75cent/gallon fuel again. Wheeee.

Just dreamin, Tom P.

There does not appear to be any shortage at the pumps in California.  You can just pull in, fill up, pay the gouger's price, and leave.  I think that we have one of these fictitious supply shortage hikes almost annually.

The local Arco near home has diesel for $4.99.

I'd nationalize the whole sorry lot, just like Pemex.   Screw 'em.

Local diesel prices all on a 2 mile stretch of the same road in Minneapolis area:

Saturday: Station #1 $4.50, Station #2 $4.09, Station #3 $4.09
Monday: Station #1 $4.29, Station #2 $4.09, Station #3 $4.49
Today: Station #1 $4.59, Station #2 $4.49, Station #3 $4.49

I just don't understand why diesel prices are through the roof while gasoline prices are slowly declining.

You could probably ship a tanker load up here and still make money after expenses.
