swap VH for V730

Any v730 experts out there that know what i will need when swapping from the existing VH to the V730 on a 6v71??

Well I get the v730 in the morning. Looked super clean. Clean filter , clean oil. 4 year old rebuild. Got a manual on the way from eBay. Hoping I'm not missing parts , adapters, etc for the swap. My existing VH uses the old spicer 4 shifter to select f/n/r. Don't know if I can adapt that to the v730

Ya i know the 6v71 will be wimpy.

My next swap will be a 6v92TA unless there is a better choice??

Switching from a 6V-71 to a 6V-92TA is a virtually identical switch-both engines are identical on the outside. Just have to plumb up the turbo on the 6V-92 and install a larger radiator.  But then you'll have 50% more torque with the 6V-92TA.  Don't waste your time with the 6V-71.  Good Luck, TomC

I have to agree with the others - don't waste the time, money and effort to put the V-730 behind the 6V71.

Unless, of course, you only want to drive around town like a transit bus.

Wrap up the 730 and put it in a corner of your garage until you can find a nice LH 6V92TA, THEN do the swap.

In the meantime, do some detective work to find out what rear axle ratio you've got in your coach.  You may have to do an axle swap as part of the powertrain change out.  Best is a 4.125:1, acceptable are 4.375:1 or 4.56:1.

Thanks Tom, glad to know it fairly straight forward for the swap. My bus still has the radiator from its 8v71 days, will this be too small for a 6v92TA?

Unless it's been swapped out for something else, yes, 4106s came with a 4.125.

IIRC, there's a number stamped on the differential input U-joint yoke, under the U-joint.  Dividing either the first or last number into the remaining numbers gives you the ratio.

You've got a 4106?  Rather surprised it's got a 6V71 in it.  Have you checked the cam pulley on the radiator end of the engine?  The engine size is molded into the pulley center.

Be aware that if you're going to install a 730 into a 4106, you're going to have to cut open the bulkhead for the transmission to fit.

I was told it is a 6v71 - there is no turbo

The valve covers had aluminum spacers under them so i was thinking that it had jakes - but none were found

Valve train looks clean but the oil is black as my soul.
