Hot rodding the 6V92
« on: January 25, 2013, 12:38:30 PM »
Well, not quite... but improving it anyway.

I have mentioned before that I never thought it made as much power as it should, while making black smoke if a little heavy on the accel. pedal.

I found my turbo (TV8102) was kind of bound up and not free wheeling very well, and only making 10 psi boost, not enough air to feed my 9B90 injectors.

So I traded the turbo for a TV7512 with a A/R of 1.23 at the turbine side, and got 9G90 injectors. That, according to the book, is going to yield 350 HP at 2100 rpm, and 1020 lb/ft of boost at 1200 rpm.

I am doing a tune up today. Injectors timed at 1.46". The book calls for 1.466", but I don't have a 1.466" gauge, so am using the 1.46" that I have. I don't think 6 thou would make a noticeable difference anyway.

Next is installing the new turbo.

I won't get to drive it for another couple of months, but I sure am looking forward to the results. Will report then.

My 8V71T probably has the same horsepower, and you are going to love it in an MC-5C.  It makes it real nice to drive up hills, I only had to downshift once between Hamilton Ontario and Nova Scotia, and that includes the northern stretch of the Adirondacks in Quebec and New Brunswick...  It was really kind of neat to keep your foot where it was, but hear the engine kind of get a deeper voice and start to growl as it bit into the hill and chewed it up...

Having used the 9200 injectors, liked them, need a good turbo to burn clean, no smoke.

We will see if this set up puts out more or less heat than before. With more air, there should be better combustion of fuel. I have a good intake: Ecco filter 1300 cfm IIRC. I can't picture in my mind if that will do more or less heat. The proof will be in the pudding in the summer up a big hill on a hot day.

If you want to get rid of a lot of heat, remove the muffler and use a resonator, that is exactly what I did on the 8V-92, and liked it. first just used a straight 5" pipe, that was a little harsh, so put the resonator on, that made for a more mello, loess harsh, so I kept it, still on.

Thanks Dave, I'll keep this in mind. How loud is a resonator compared to a muffler?

Why Not Go For More Power?
« Reply #7 on: January 25, 2013, 07:52:02 PM »
I know right now you don't want to hear this again.  But....since you are over $80%$ into the hop up, how about trading in that inadequate turbo for a really "big" turbo and trading those dinky injectors for something more adequate....like say about "140's"?

Then address the intake, exhaust, cooling and most importantly, that necessary BIG air to air intercooler?  Why have 350 hp when you can have a streetable 500?  Just learn to keep your foot out of it unless you want JUST TO HAVE FUN.  IMHO. HB of CJ (old coot) :) :) :)

my humble point is why go to all this trouble unless you are very sure you will happy with the power results forever.  Right now I'm not so sure you will be...in the long run.  Why compromise?  Where is any mention of a JAKE BRAKE?.  Setting racks is FUN!

Just remember the bigger the injector, the more heat you have to contend with. And the shorter the engine life. Granted the 9G90 is rated for a 500,000mi engine. If you went with 9G00 (100 injectors), you'd have more like 390hp and 1170lb/ft torque. You're theoretical engine life would reduce to 450,000mi. The key with big injectors is to only use it when you really need it.

On my 8V-71T with air to air intercooling, my 7G75 injectors give me 375hp and 1125lb/ft torque. I tried one time going up the Grapevine with almost flooring it, but with the pedal up about an inch with still more to spare (could accelerate above). Instead of the old 32mph was doing 45mph (by GPS). Much more tolerable (30% faster). Good Luck, TomC

Hb of CJ,
we set a 8V-92 to 2650 rpm a with the 150  ( Mil), am a generator
Outfit, was told by the DDC dist, that was the only way we could get the 150 injectors, a long time order,  yes they did good, but had lil less boost psi & some smoke than my 8V-92 with the 120's with a turbo from a 6V-92 (350 HP) that crazy combo pumped up nice biggie psi , required steel air box covers as the stock aluminum just leaked then broke off.
Had lots fun

Need to add, the 4501 with the 150's ran slightly better HP wise as my MC7 with the 9200 and the goofy 6V-92 turbo, main difference, my MC7 did not smoke once it started building boost, the 4501 tended to smoke most of the time. just needed more boost.
We both have gotten lil older and maybe lil brighter, those days were when fuel was $1,00 or lil less.

Sledhead,  Actually I think it was about 10 yrs ago for the $1.00 around here, that was when Brunswick Ga was the cheap fuel, now they are the highest, actually cheaper in Fl, hard to imagine..
In those days, my business was going strong and fuel was not expensive, hell for that matter it is still the cheapest art of a bus RV.
But we were having fun with our hot rod bus's. Making fools out of 18 wheelers running empty on the  mountains, always told them I was running a wore out 318  ;D :o
some had no sense of humor.
