Six speed spicer to Alison Auto what do I need?
« on: February 12, 2013, 09:13:47 PM »
Hi All

Hoping someone can help me learn a little

i have a 6V92ta mechanical with six speed odrive spicer and am thinking of changing to an Auto.
What I am trying to learn is what parts do I need. I was thinking of buying an engine with alison attached but don't really need the engine and shipping to Australia will be too much with engine.
Mainly trying to understand bellhousing and engine connection etc as I am aware of need for cooler shifter etc.
Probably looking for a HT740 or similar however with a 3.71 rear end I may need to change that as well

Any help appreciated

Thanx
Glen

Hi, Glen.

I'm not up on those conversions, but I see a couple of problems right away.

Many conversions are dependent on the kind of bus they they are going into, so you probably want to post that information. Also, the automatic that you mention is not an overdrive unit, so you have a problem there to solve, as well.

Good luck on your conversion.

My bus was converted from stick
To Allison 740. Same engine as you. So
I know it can be done. Someone with more expertise will chime in soon.

It sounds like you have the Spicer 1062.  That is a great transmission.  Having owned several previous buses with both types of transmissions I would much prefer the Spicer, IMO.  Clifford nailed it on the parts needed.  You might also think of installing a Stone Bennett electric shifter while you're at it, you will love it and it gives positive control over a 740.  I used to buy all the parts needed for the conversion from Sam Caylor at Caylor Supply in Rantoul, Kansas.  Trans., double oil cooler, shifter, modulator, flexplate and hub, spin on filter bases.  All on one pallet.  Try Sam.  Good luck.  I would stick with the 6 speed.

Assuming you're using 12R-22.5 rubber at 485rpm, with the 3.71 rear end (never heard of a 3.71-either 3.70 or 3.73) with the Allison HT740 with direct fourth, you'll be at 1799rpm at 60mph-which isn't too fast. Go to 65mph and you'll be at 1949rpm-starting to get a bit fast for the 92 series.

If you use a B500 or 4000 series Allison, besides having to use a mechanical/electronic gas pedal position sensor, in 5th gear (.74) will get you 1442rpm at 65 and 1664rpm at 75. I don't think you could use sixth (.64). Good Luck, TomC

Thanx All just what I was after

I didn't include any bus details due to it being an Aussie model I didn't think you would know much about, but it is a 1986 Denning Landseer.

Not 100% sure on the 3.71, just what I had written down at some pointonly other detail I have is Eaton 26123.
The gearbox details I have written say a spicer 1463C

TomC 60mph is the limit here so that wouldn't be too bad with a 740 however 11R22.5 are the norm for tyres here too. Any chance you could calculate that for me with those tyres?
Thanx
Glen
