Quarter Mile Times.....
« on: March 17, 2013, 08:06:08 PM »
Let's all be honest with ourselves.

Haven't you wondered what your bus can do in the quarter mile? Or 0 - 60?  With an iPhone app you need wonder no longer!  Here it is.

1964 PD4106.
Weight at 24,730.
8V71N, N65s, Advanced cam timing, 2450 rpms.
4 speed Spicer.
and....

Stock Muffler!

The third 0-60 time is the bus.  60 is reached in third gear.

The quarter mile time is 27.1 seconds at 49.89 seconds.

I plan to install the new 5" muffler and take another run to see if there is any tangible improvement.  lol!

It's made by Hodel Apps.  Hodelapps.com.

I use this app as a speedometer on the bus.  There's a free version that doesn't include the HUD display (Heads Up Display).  I have the paid version and use the HUD quite a bit.

I took the bus for a spin this weekend and while snapping in my phone into the windshield mount I decided to check out the app.  The 1/4 mile and 0-60 features are super easy to use. Just reset them to zero, when you start moving it starts counting!

My RT was pretty bad I'm sure!  lol!  It's a bus, you could brew a cup of coffee on your way to 60 mph!!

Update:

Using the speed (49.89mph) and the weight (24,730) you can calculate the average horsepower to the wheels over the quarter mile.  For my bus that worked out to 252.4 HP at the wheels, all losses included, including wind.  That's not bad.  The tuners (sports cars) say a 15% drive train loss is average for a car with a manual transmission .  My 8V71 is setup for the 304/318 gross rating.  304hp less 15% is 258.4.   That said, this motor spins to 2450 rpm and several seconds are lost in the up shifts to 2nd and 3rd.  The old timer that helped me set the engine up said it was around 335 HP at 2450rpm.

There you go.  252hp to the wheels from approx 304-335hp.

I enjoy this as being a hot rodder type, and played with the 12V-71 and the 8V-92 then buying the present 30k lb with the ISM500, I do enjoy these dumb areas of playing.  Have not had it to e drag strip but know traffic light drags, takes a sharp car driver to beat the first 500 ft + launch, yes have the 4000MHR Allison, it sure beats the Road Ranger RTO910 easy.

Use to Drag race NHRA Super Stock many years ago. Boys, keep your buses on the road and cruising.  I would imagine, most track owners wouldn't want my 43,000 pound bus on there concrete starting pad. If you do run um down the strip, Don't forget the bleach water to lite those tires up and get um hot. ::)
