What's the best way to get alge out of the fuel tank? Can the fuel be saved?
Thanks,
Richard

If I'm not mistaken diesel should burn up any algae. If you empty the bio-diesel out, and run reg diesel though it should clean it out. I have also Heard if you use bio-fuel for the first time, you need to change the fuel filter several times because it also cleans out residue let over from reg. also burns cleaner and doesn't smell as heavy.

Sorry MysteryBus, I should have been clear as to the fact that it is reg, diesel in the tank. The old fuel had probably been there for some as the fuel has a blackish color to it and fills the fuel filter up fairly quick. The mech, at detroit diesel thought it might be alge whereas some thought it might be the inside of a fuel line breaking down.

Richard -
Try adding some "Bio-Bor" to the fuel tank, available thru West Marine and other vendors.
It "eats" the algae that lives in that separation line between diesel and any water that may have condensed into the bottom of the tank.
And as a precaution, always leave your coach parked with a full tank of fuel after a trip. Reduces the potential for water condensation which leads to the algae growth.
Of course, spare fuel filters are a must!

Richard, even after you add a product like Sea Foam or Bio-Bor it has to be polished there should be someone in that area that will do that for 50 buck plus a few cents a gal how many gals are we talking about here

Thanks RJ, I'll give that a try. I hate to loose a full tank of fuel at todays prices. I just bought this bus and have no ideal how long it sat.

Best I can describe is a filtering system but if black it is a fungus not alge and a HTH tablet kills the fungus, alge needs sunlight to grow a fungus likes the dark
Just pump it through a couple of whole house filters then 5 or 10 micron fuel filter and it will clean up

Clifford ya beat me to it. We have a big pond here at the ranch and every 5 months I spray it with algiside to basically provide a dark blacket that covers it and does not let light get to the water. The alge dies. So in the tank it can't be alge.

If regular diesel the black could be asphalt. I used to have that problem in boats Years ago! Diesel conditioner will recombine it.
