Mystery 6v92 package
« on: March 30, 2013, 06:57:07 PM »
I managed to get my hands on a mystery 6v92 + v730 package in what looks like a flixable frame with added casters , fuel tank , air tank , air throttle , push button shifter, etc..

The story was it was bought from the navy, it has been resprayed but otherwise looks new, had a full tank of diesel and cranked right up.

It has six gauges connected to ports on the side of the v-730, im guessing it was a test stand for rebuilding allison V transmissions?

It has an hour meter that reads 16 hours.

Anyone seen anything like this before? If it all checks out its going in my 4106.

I had a friend who is a DD mechanic look at it and says it looks like new and that it is a silver. Strange all the hoses and gauges to the V-730 - that is why we thought it may have been a v drive test stand, it is designed to be rolled around a workshop as a stand alone power unit.

It was too cheap to pass up

It's not a Navy or military engine it is a transportation 6v92 for a bus the Navy FWIW uses the screaming 53 series maybe the whole bus was bought from the Navy ?  even a sick 6v92 is better that what you have now

It could have been some type test station but it would have been from a shop that could not afford a real dyno testing station like a Allison dealer would have and it would be for a 730 only strange setup you have there man

I hope it works out for you the 6V71 is not much

I would wager that is out of a Flx transit also.  My frame cut off with the 6L71TA and VR730 had the same big old ugly muffler.  That control panel is worth some bucks with all the liquid guages.  Nice set up.  Look inside the air box covers and valve covers and see what is in there.

I think it was probably from a trade school teaching tune-ups, maintenance and diagnostics.  Very cool piece.

That's my best guess as well, that it was a training piece either for a transit company or vocational school.  Great find.

I saw that motor on EBAY and thought it might be a good deal. But could not get down there to check it out.
Hope it's a good one! -Jay
