Jim,

There's one on eBay: http://tinyurl.com/AllisonV730

The listing says it's for right turning motors, but then says it came from a mid 70's bus with an 8V71, which was most likely a lefty like yours, so there may be some confusion on the seller's part as to what he actually has. Shipping may be an issue depending on where you are.

You can also google "allison V730 for sale" and find some more.

The 731 is the electronically controlled version of the 730.

Jim -

Be aware that one of the negatives about installing the V-730 in your 4106 is that you're going to lose 1 - 2 mpg in fuel economy, and approximately 5-7 mph of top speed.  And your going to have to watch the temp gauge more closely.

Of course, the advantage is all you have to do is "stab & steer", rather than actually "drive" the coach.

Best if you can find a transit with either a V6 or V8 attached to the transmission, that way you have all the parts for the swap.  Might be cheaper to buy the whole bus, rather than just the tranny.

You'll have to cut a big hole in the engine bulkhead - make sure you reinforce it when you do.

Please take a minute to edit your profile with a signature line including information similar to mine below.  By doing so, we can better help you find parts and service in your area - you might even find out there's another busnut not too far away!

Pull the 8V-71 and 4spd and install a 6V-92TA (either mechanical or electronic) and the V730. The engine is 400lbs lighter and shorter-giving you some room to work with it. Lot's of 6V-92's around from transit buses. Good Luck, TomC

All RJ says is true but the real advantage is when starting when stopped on a steep incline, I just don't have to worry about that any more and it is a real relief.

Backing up as slowly as you like is great also.

As for fuel mileage, these things use so much fuel that a few more gal/mi just doesn't matter much!

I would never go back even though shifting was usually a lot of fun.

I feel your pain with backing up, and really don't like where they put the reverse!

I love the auto. It allows access to the places I like to take the bus, like my driveway. LOL

I can tell you, you'll simply love the auto trans. Takes all of the tension out of driving-especially starting on a hill. If you want to keep the 8V-71, turbocharge it. I went from 300hp and 800lb/ft torque with N65 injectors to 375hp and 1125lb/ft torque with 7G75 injectors. And what a difference in performance! I have 4.56 rear end with 11R-24.5 rubber. I cruise at 1850rpm which is 58mph. My fuel mileage is still the same (4.5-6.5), but I don't mind with the performance and no smoking at altitude. Turbocharging really wakes up the 8V-71. Good Luck, TomC
