Update on repower
« on: May 10, 2013, 04:03:53 PM »
Hey all,

I was all set to go to California to pickup the bus on Sunday and a bunch of stuff just kinda went wrong.

First I was in Nashville producing a CD for a client and I got shingles. Wow! did that suck. Get the shot guys.

I was recovering and then a couple days before I was set to leave the shingles started flaring up again. My ride from LA to San Luis Obispo fell through. The bus needed a number of tires, at least two and probably more like 4 but it may have needed up to 6 tires and since I don't need tires on my bus and there was no guarantee I'd find good used ones for a reasonable price. I decided to pass on the bus. I have to say Sean, the owner, was unbelievably gracious and totally understood. If anyone wants to do a 6v92/740 repower with less than 3000 miles on them, contact me if you're interested.

I'm still on the hunt for a repower but probably something a little closer to where I live.

I so looked forward to meeting Bruce and Clifford from the group but I guess it'll have to wait.

Just thought I should update y'all

Dave,

San Luis Obispo/ Arroyo Grande area. I have contact info with the owner if you need it. His name is Sean and he is Lumpy here on the board. He sent a video of a cold start and that engine ran perfectly. Amazing oil pressure. Somebody's gonna get a quality repower.

Dave -

This might be a good opportunity to make your 5C a hot rod!

Just wondering where it was. Nice thought RJ. Don't want the bus part. Maybe if it was out. Is it in an MCI now?

That's what Rick said earlier. . . MC-9, IIRC.

Tempting?

That is too bad, Rick. Sorry to hear about everything. Who knows, maybe saved you a bundle?

If it was me, I would rent a car one way out of LAX. Probably be at least $100, but then you could return it anywhere. If you want to go cheap, then get a ride to an off airport car rental place (like out about 10 miles or so) and that often ends up saving quite a bit.

Yep it is tempting.I alreasy e mailed Rick for more info. But finally decided I don t want the Bus with it and the tire thing is not good either. You have seen the ranch. Its nice but gravel everywhere. It was tough enough getting the 5C in here with the winding driveway let alone a40 footer. Just not our turn.
Other thing is that top turbo wouldn t fit.It would have to be moved to the side and exhaust re fabed . Darn.
And you will love this who would want a MC9 with a 6 V71 lol

I know of an MC9 with a fairly fresh 6v92 in it that is going to be for sale soon and right in your backyard (or rather, mine).

Partially converted (livable) and doesn't need tires. I'll probably be handling the showing and sale for my friend. It's
currently in eastern SD and will probably be moved to Delano in the next month or so.
$20K is probably right in the ball park. Lots of extras included.

You could swap engines and resell it or part it out and sell the RV stuff and shell and more than recover your money.

Gonna be a heck of a deal for someone.

Rick,

I know you have had your mind set on an 8V92 for a long time, so why are you even considering compromising to a 6V92. It's your money and your choice, but ask yourself if you would be happy with a 6V92. If the answer is yes, then the bus gumpy is offering sounds like the way to go. Remember that if you get an engine from another bus, the work will be the same for either one. Do you really want to risk doing the job twice if you select a 6V92 and aren't happy with it? Just my 2 cents, and keep the change.

Good luck, Sam

I had two trucks-one with a 6V-92TA and mine with the 8V-92TA. Even though both trucks were doing furniture-meaning grossing out around 65,000lbs on average, the 6V-92TA was working all the time. The 8V-92TA was usually just cruising along. Even so, both engines went 500,000miles before first overhaul.

I sold the Kenworth with the 8V-92TA with 880,000miles on it still running well after only one overhaul (mind you this is not a low maintenance engine. Every 100,000miles run the rack; every 200,000miles roll in new rod and main bearings; every 300,000miles rebuild the turbo and blower). The 6V-92TA in the '79 GMC Astro cabover was exchanged for the initial work done on my bus. Good Luck, TomC
