Work Camping in the UP
« on: May 26, 2013, 03:06:40 AM »
Anybody else workcamping this summer?  We are in St Ignace, Michigan at Castlerock campark.  First time we have done this and so far we are really enjoying it.  Don't want to loose contact with all my bussing buddies so if your travels bring you near the Upper Penisular of Michigan, stop by and see us.  We are honorary yooupers for the summer.  (Google it)

About 2 hours East of ATL on I-20 and 4 miles south of I-20.
Got Electricity and Water for 4-5 coaches.  Less that a mile to a
dumpstation.  Stop by and sit a spell.

We did last summer at Crater Lake RV Park and Seal Rocks RV Cove in Oregon. Had lots of fun and met some great folk.

We're in Abilene tending to some family situations, not work camping this summer. Hopefully next year!  ;)

Have fun!  8)

John:
Keep your eyes peeled for Charlie and Judy Bukoski of the Southeast Bus Nuts. Both are Michiganders and get back there often, sometimes to the U.P.

YA you Betcha, My SIL works at the mill up there. It is cold really cold in the winter and we tell her to run when summer gets there, but she stays? Lol
Have fun "Workamping" we did it for 6 months and loved it. The problem was the Management and some of the long term help afraid of us taking there jobs or someone new making them work.

Workcamping is an interesting concept, but don't you work a lot of hours for a camping spot?  If a spot is $700 a month and you work 20 hours a week you're a little above minimum wage.  Now, if you enjoy the work it wouldn't be a bad thing.  Do you pay taxes on the free rent?

I don't know why full time help would be threatened by seasonal help as long as they do their jobs.

Brian that was the problem they didn't want to do their job and we came in wanting to work and have fun. We were told by them to not do so much because they would never pay what it was worth. What we didn't know was they were getting their spot and gas plus 11.00 an hour. We signed on for 9.00 an hour and had to pay for our gas and spot (450.00) (normal was 625.00 a month) per month. We didn't know go figure. We were having fun watering lawns, trimming berry bushes, painting , building docks, brushing spider webs down, cleaning units that some rented for a week, mowing lawns fixing equipment which the help told us not to do because they would buy new equipment if it wasn't fixable. When we went to the management they were the same and set us up with the owner who we went to next but was laid off for the season. It was weird.
After we left the owner called and tried to get us back because when we left she saw her bottom line change and returning customers had asked where we went because we made sure everyone was taken care of. so we turned her down and then told her what to watch for with these people and that she should consider offering free sites to all workers etc.
We might consider hosting next time but it will be awhile before we go through that again. These people were just dishonest, Sad
