Rust on back of a 4106

An new busnut has found a 4106. Goodlooking bus, his main concern is rust on back of coach and rear roof line.

Anyone have an idea?

Isn't that aluminium?  If so it's probably just the paint failing, it's hard to paint aluminium.

No it is rust lots of steel on a GM in that area for the overhead truss to hold the engine up I would check it very close being that area is almost impossible to repair he needs to check the roof line at the back if the rivet heads have rust he should pass on that one IMO

My Eagle had a couple of places that looked like that so I scraped them off to see what was going on. The aluminum underneath looked fine so I have some painting ahead to make it look good again. I've seen paint that looked like that on several Eagles. The only way to know what is under there is to dig into it and scrape off some paint. If it is rust you will know immediately without scraping a very big spot.
Miss Scarlett is an Eagle 10 with a 6v92 and Allison 740
UPDATE: finished enough to use!!!- exterior will remain original.

Am I missing something? If that tiny little surface rust parked a 4106 then all would be decommissioned. I wouldn't flinch at that, looks to be easily cleaned up. I have seen 4106 rust and I don't think that would qualify. Is there more to this pic than I can see? Someone help me here.

He needs to check it the cradles I have saw turn loose are almost always on that corner,if he sees some welding patches on the upper part where the 1 inch bolt goes through the hanger for the up rights he should pass it will be a problem later

 I am looking at the rivet above the screw the bit of corrosion is caused by electrolysis that is common where 2 different type of metal are connected like on a Eagle and GM's there's not much you can do about it

Actually a cheep and easy fix. Get a 20ft I-beam and lay it length wise down the top of the bus. Wrap a chain around bus and I-beam and cinch it down with a cargo chain tensioner. Run a chain and a come-along off back of I-beam to motor frame and ratchet it up tight. You can get thousands of additional miles out of a rusty 4106 using this method.

Paint the support assembly to match your bus.

Lol I take it you never saw a 4106 on the side of road with the engine dropped on 1 corner, I have saw several go to the scrap yard because of rotten trusses

I was attempting to be funny, nothing directed at you. I hope one day we get to meet, it makes it easier to understand my personality. I have nothing but the highest respect for your knowledge and understanding of buses and their mode of motion. You offer sound advice on subjects that frankly no one else has any experience with. I on the other-hand, have only experience with one. Unfortunately, I am disheartened to know you don't think my idea is viable, I thought I could at least get an honorable mention award for it.

I did like the beam idea I wish I would have thought of the beam when I drove a Eagle home and lost the all baggage compartment  

I bet the people picking up cans on the highway thought they had died and went to heaven see all that aluminum on the side of the road now that bus had some rust

 Duh! That's why you install a pair of heavy duty casters on the lower back side of engine cradle. Allow 3/4 inch clearance with road. Eagle owners have been doing this for years, but with many more casters in more locations.......
