Where can I find this muffler hanger (pic attached)
« on: October 26, 2013, 08:18:00 AM »
I ordered a new muffler for my bus.  It is a Nelson 86757M that is an oval 12"x15" muffler.  I called Nelson and they have no hangers for this muffler.  There are a few hangers for a 12"x15" muffler out there, but they don't match what I have.

Has anyone seen a muffler hanger for a 12"x15" muffler that looks like the one in the attached PDF?  MCI is out of stock although they have the muffler and most of the other exhaust parts.  (MCI wants three times as much for the muffler.)  I could probably reuse the existing hangers, but they are very rusty and I would just as well replace them.

My 10 x 15 muffler from Donalson-they had the hangers available. After looking at them though, it's not very hard to make your own. When I did my 10 x 15 oval for the bus, I used a 1" wide by 3/16" strap and bent it around the muffler (they're pretty strong when new). Then used some shock absorber rubbers for the insulators. Works just fine. Good Luck, TomC

I had no luck with United Muffler.  They told me to call Auto-Jet since I'm in the USA.  Auto-Jet wouldn't help me at all after I told them I had a coach bus and not a school bus.

I'm trying to see if I can find an exact replacement hanger the same as in the PDF I attached.  It will certainly make things easier.  There are a few 12x15" oval muffler hangers out there, but they are different in design and would require rework.  If my muffler was 10"x15" oval I think it would be a lot easier as that is a far more common size.

I had to search Auto-jet/United's webb site to find my muffler. I had to make my own brackets, but on an MC-8 it was easy.

Brian
I noticed a salvaged Dina in a yard in southern  Missouri about a month ago. I am going by there tomorrow on the way to Marion, IL. I will get you the name/number of the yard and get it to you. It looked like it was a fire in the front on the coach so maybe the rear is in good shape.

I would just take whats left of the hangers you have to some local fab shop and ask them to make you one.  Probably faster, cheaper and easier that any other route.

I figure it would be cheaper and easier to buy a new hanger rather than get one fabricated.  It is really more that I would like to have new hangers than that I need to have new hangers.  If I cut the bolts off on the existing hangers I should be able to reuse them just fine.  I don't think they are rusty enough to break.

It wouldn't be worth trying to get hangers off a salvage Dina as they aren't likely to be in much better condition than what I have.  As B_K said, it would be nice to know where the salvage Dina is for future reference.  Carl Raines used to have several salvage Dinas in southeast Illinois, but he closed or sold the business and scrapped his Dinas.
